—DEFENSE!
—Who the fuck do you think I am, Ivan Drago? –I shouted.
The following weeks we spent training. Mornings at the ruins where Idris taught me about different fighting techniques. Boxing, mixed martial arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and every other known fighting method was known by Idris. We ran together across the ocean road at night when nobody was there and could see the speed we reached. Whenever we encountered someone he asked me to erase the memory of us so I could practice doing this without being angry or with fear.
—So Vampires can also control minds? –I was curious.
—Only a few of us can, mostly remove memories of us, to maintain the balance or small things, we are nothing like Mind Omnias.
We became close, we became friends, since the night we kissed it never happened again, and Idris refused to feed on me every time I offered. I wondered where he got his blood from but didn't want to ask.
Every afternoon we went back to Nora's and Aaron's cottage. Some days were better than others and I could pretend not to be as powerful without them realizing, other days ended up with me whipping that day from existence.
It puzzled me because even though we were becoming friends, every time they realized how powerful I was, they couldn't control the urge of wanting to own me, to control me and use me. I once had the chance to talk to Nora, we had stayed for dinner and we were having a glass of wine while Aaron and Idris cooked. She said she was desperate for a child but at the same time afraid that if he came, they wouldn't be able to protect it from the hunters.
I thought that desperation might be the reason why they seeked owning me as a weapon, having something so powerful that they might be able to fight a hunter. —There's no record of anyone ever killing one of them. –Nora once said.
It made me wonder how old Luc was, if they don't age, and they can't be killed by anything, how long had he been living on this earth? And how many people must he have killed by now?
This exercise of controlling my powers made me become sharper. Once Nora asked me to make a flower bloom, she explained what the thought process should be, I ended up turning the whole field into a lavender field. A couple of minutes later I was saying —Forget this ever happened, we didn't make it Today, we were busy.
Day after day the same routine, training my body, training my mind, and repeating. I was getting bored but I could see the improvements and that was a huge motivation.
I spoke with my family and friends every night and I spoke to Luc as much as I could. We agreed on the lies with Idris before every conversation but I didn't want him in the room with me. It was getting hard to say "love" in front of him without feeling guilty.
There was always a new excuse to stay a bit longer, to push the trip a bit more but it had already been a month and I knew we had to start thinking about the next steps of the plan, or Luc was going to realize something was wrong. I could feel it in his voice every time we spoke, I knew he was feeling suspicious.
I'd learnt how to fight, how to control nature and how to control, read and talk to minds in that month. What I didn't know was how to kill a hunter. Every time that thought crossed my mind I couldn't help but push it away, was I really capable of killing Luc? If there was a way, could I do it?
I needed to speak to Ciara about this. I walked to the kitchen and stood by her side. —Ciara, can I ask you something?
—Sure Cas, what's troubling you?
—I know you said you can't see Faceless, but you can see other hunters right?
—Yes, we can see their stories.
—So you would know, if any of them were killed.
—I'm sorry darling, I don't have a record of that ever happening.
Wow, not one of them was killed? —Why are they so powerful?
She sat down at the table and I followed her, she poured two glasses of wine.
—Centuries ago. Eidolons started appearing. Before them, laws were very clear. No one can kill someone from their own species. If you did, you would become a dolofono and you would be hunted and killed by your own kind. This kept the balance I talked about the first night we met. When Eidolons appeared, they did not belong to one species, so this rule couldn't apply. They were so powerful and strong that even if someone wanted to kill them, they would just end up dead.
A long time ago an Eidolon was born. The son of a witch and a vampire. At the age of 35, he awoke and became the most powerful being on earth, even more powerful than any other Eidolon who was already alive. This man was consumed by power, the darkness in him that was pushed by his vampire side turned him into a terribly powerful and dark witch. Witches are usually advocated for using their magic for good, but he was nothing of the sort. He became obsessed with becoming the most powerful sorcerer in the world and for this, he knew he had to kill his own kind.
Salem was a walk in the park. He killed thousands of witches in no more than a year and drank their blood. He killed powerful high priestesses and their complete covens. Anyone who tried to stop him ended up dead. The world became a very dark place. Mind Omnias were doing whatever they could to keep humans from learning about him, but whoever couldn't be reached by the Omnias, was sure that the devil had arisen and come to earth. There was panic and fear and death all over.
The remaining 30 high priestesses in the world got together and sacrificed themselves to the gods of nature in order to offer something that could restore the balance the world had lost. They asked the gods to forbid the birth of any other Eidolon and to exterminate the ones who were still alive. The blood sacrifice didn't work as expected as when all the witches were dead, their blood was absorbed by one of them, who was reborn, and this time she was carrying a child.
That child became the first Hinban to ever exist. Every year, the witch birthed another child, another Hinban. She gave birth to 10 men and 5 women, who became the Faceless. They went on to have children amongst each other and continue the lineage of Hinbans.
The first born child, Bjorn, hunted the Eidolon when he was only 10 years old. It is said that he killed him even before he could speak a word. Since their appearance in this world, Eidolons have been hunted and killed, those who remain are said to be in hiding and will never surface or use their powers.
Being thirsty for the hunt, some Hinbans have gone rogue, and have started hunting other beings who they believe are not working with the balance of nature and some, just for the thrill of the hunt.
Witches have tried to summon the gods once again to ask them to stop the massacres, to rid Hinbans from some of their power, they've sacrificed lives to get them to answer their calling, but there has not been any success in centuries. They just hope nature, at some point offers something, which is born as Bjorn was born once, and can stop Hinbans from becoming the exact same thing they were once created to stop. — She stopped talking.
—Wow.
I said "wow", this woman had just told me the most epic story I've ever heard in my life, after Gladiator, or course, and I sat there with my mouth half opened and said "wow". Yeah, I was definitely going to be killed by Luc.
