New dawn

The inside of that place made me think about the staircase scene from the Titanic movie. We walked upstairs and into a long corridor with doors at each side. At the end of the corridor, a huge window lit the place with natural light.

The doors at each side were wooden with a golden plaque. Each plate with a different name engraved. I read each name in whispers until we got to one I knew who it belonged to: Bjorn.

—Bjorn. –I said out loud. Luc was walking right behind me. As I said that name I turned and took a glimpse at his eyes. He said nothing, so I turned around and kept walking.

The door that followed had the same golden plaque but there was no name engraved. —This is your room. –Luc said.

I stood in front of it and hesitated for a second before opening it. He moved my body gently and turned the knob and pushed the door open.

I smelled wood. Different types of wood that anyone could tell where from a different era. The room was cold and a bit humid, as if no one had slept there for a long time. Heavy purple window curtains covered a big window on the side of the room. I walked to them first and allowed the sun to come into the room.

Wooden floors and a huge wooden bed. —It's a lot of wood. –I joked and smiled.

—They've brought your things. –He looked at my bags which were placed on top of the bed.

—Very efficient service, please remind me to tip accordingly. –I should have stopped with the jokes already.

At least my terrible humor made him smile. —Well. I'll let you settle down, if you need me.... –He said and paused and then turned around to leave.

—Bjorn. –I said.

He turned to me. —Yes?

—That's your room's name.

—Yes.

—I know where to find you then.

—Yes.

He closed the door behind him and something inside me made me lock it as soon as he was gone. A fake sense of safety kicked in.

I walked back to the window and looked outside. My window faced the front of the house. A beautiful mazed flower garden which led to a lake. Such a huge garden and no one was enjoying it. I wondered how many people lived in that place. I wondered what that place was and what we were doing there.

I walked back to the bed and searched for my phone in my backpack. I hadn't tuned it on since before the flight. I saw the little apple on my screen and then... no service.

I placed it on the night table and opened the drawers to see if there was anything in there. Empty. Unsure if I should unpack, I pushed my bag to the left side of the bed and layed down.

...

—Kill him.

It's a man's voice.

I feel nothing, I'm not afraid.

I hear crying.

It's not me. I'm not crying. I'm calm.

—Kill him now.

It's my voice, I'm the one speaking.

I open my eyes. There's another man in front of me. He is on his knees. He is crying.

I turn to my left. It's a boy, he is about 15 years old. He is afraid.

I see my hand. I hand him a knife.

—It's your destiny! Kill him!

The boy takes the knife from my hand. He is trembling.

The knife falls to the floor.

I pick it up.

I walk forwards. I'm next to the crying man.

—Please... –he looks at me. —Please Bjorn.

I slit his throat.

...

I woke up knowing that was not a dream, not my imagination.

I think my subconscious was reminding me of who Luc was. I had to see it. I had to see the monster so I wouldn't confuse him for a human being.

Someone knocked on my door and without even waiting for an answer they tried to open it. Locked. A louder noise. I stood up and when I was about to unlock it he pushed it open and hit me directly in the face. My body was thrown to the floor.

—I'm sorry, I thought something had happened.

I saw him and the dream came back to me.

—What's wrong? –He asked.

I thought about telling him what I've seen. —You've just shoved a door in my face. That's what's wrong.

—I thought something...

I interrupted. —Yeah.. had happened, I know. –And stood up.

—Dinner's ready downstairs.

—Ok, let 's go. –I started walking to the door where he was standing.

—You are not feeling well. –-He placed his arm against the wall and prevented me from walking through.

I looked at his eyes and understood. —They don't know what I am right?

—I haven't been here in a while. Let me go down and see how things are working, if something has changed. If everything is ok, we can go down together. Tomorrow.

—What is this place?

—I'll explain everything tomorrow. For now, try and rest. Gain your strengths.

I held his arm with my hand and removed it from in front of me. —I'm quite strong already.

He smiled. —Yes you certainly are. But please, stay here tonight.

I took a step back. —Enjoy your dinner.

—I'll be back.

—Great reference for present times.

—Sorry?

—-Terminator?

He laughed. —Can't believe I fell in love with you.

He turned around and left. I closed the door again, this time no locking as he had destroyed every inch of fake security I could find.

"Can't believe I fell in love with you." His voice echoed in my head as I was falling back asleep. "Can't believe I fell in love with you." "Kill him." "Can't believe I fell in love with you." "Kill him."

Who was him really?

The fun, nice guy who cared about me and who I had fallen in love with, Luc? Or the cold blooded hunter who I've seen in my dream, Bjorn?
