Five: The First Time.

A week later, Artie was wheeling himself down the corridor of the school hallway...

Artie's Voice-Over "You see this face? This is what enlightenment looks like. It doesn't matter if he's in prison like Gandhi, trapped inside a woman's body like Chaz Bono, or stuck in a wheelchair like me; when a man finds his calling, all is right in the world. I still love performing, but thanks to Mr. Schue and the school musical that Ashleigh graciously allowed me to do on my own... but then the guilt seeps in. Coach Beiste, Miss Pillsbury, and I knew Ashleigh was the right candidate for Maria, but Ashleigh also made the right statement in Miss Pillsbury's office when she said we didn't want to hurt Rachel's feelings."

Artie was in the auditorium, staring at Rachel's outfit.

Artie's Voice-Over: "The key to being a director is having opinions about everything."

"No." Artie muttered.

Artie's Voice-Over: "Even stuff you have no idea about."

"No." Said Artie.

"I think it's great." Rachel says.

"Go." Artie tells her.

Rachel came out in a hideous dress.

"Definitely." Artie mumbled.

"Really? No." Rachel says.

"That's it." Artie said.

Rachel groaned.

Artie's Voice-Over: "I'm both sad and happy that the musical is days away. But watching Blaine and Rachel perform is just horrible, horrible, horrible."

"This just isn't working, Artie. We've been at this for hours. I'm sorry, I can't even pretend to be in love with her." Blaine says.

"Ouch!" Rachel shouted, shoving Blaine and scoffing loudly.

"Guys, they're meant to be in love. They look like strangers. I think we need a different Maria." Artie says, looking over at Shannon and Emma.

"Well, what are you thinking, Artie?" Emma asked.

"Maybe have Ashleigh play the Maria scenes with Blaine... because they're in love anyway. For real. Right?" Artie asked, looking at Blaine.

"Yeah, love the ground she walks on." Said Blaine.

Emma gushes, placing her hand on her chest.

"Wait, you're gonna have Ashleigh play Maria?" Rachel asked.

"Their two dads did pay for the musical not to be cancelled; it's only fair to have Ashleigh involved too." Said Emma.

"Right. Rachel any scenes with Santana, you'll be playing Maria, and in any scenes with Blaine, Ashleigh will play Maria. Let's test out the theory." Said Artie.

"Go get Ashleigh." Shannon says, staring at Blaine.

Twenty minutes later, Ashleigh was standing on stage with Blaine and Artie, her lips twitching into a smile.

The song began playing, and Blaine and Ashleigh held a piece of paper each.

Blaine and Ashleigh stood in front of each other, staring into each other's eyes, glancing down at the paper occasionally.

Rachel was sitting down, staring at them.
