Down.

          Down.

                       Down.

The voice swam in her head as she tossed in her bedsheets, forcing her to kick them off with one leg. Luz had never been afraid of the dark until recently but it wasn't the typical kind.

It was the one that ate your soul bit by bit, consumed you whole and tossed you right out like a wad of spit gum.

You are nothing, it said.

Can't you be brave? They reminded her. The shadows all blurring and crowding together to hold her in her mind like a flytrap might trap a fly. She shuffled along the catacombs of her mind for a minute, then shook it off as she gasped, her eyes shooting open.

She was home. She was safe and she desperately wanted to get rid of the icky feeling it's hands had left behind. She traipsed toward her light switch and then toward the chair where she had left her towel. She had a bad habit of leaving things everywhere, partially because of her diagnosed ADHD and partially because she just couldn't be bothered.

Her moms had gotten tired of telling her off every moment they could. She raised an eyebrow to herself then shook her head as she heard a crash in the living room. She supposed Edalyn had gotten into trouble again. Most of the time, she thought of her as Eda.

After a couple of years that the woman had spent with her mother she had taken to coming to her for advice and they had formed a friendship. Her mother couldn't have been more happy and they married a few years later, Eda legally adopting Luz as her own.

"Are you alright, mom?" She voiced as she opened the door a bit. When she failed to register a response, she quickly walked into the hallway. "Mom, where's Mama?"

The woman smiled mischievously. "She's on a work trip, kid. I was just trying to make something to entertain King." She pointed to their dog who was huddled in the corner, frightened by the noise.

Luz picked him up, petting his fur and cooing at him. "You're going to injure yourself one day."

"That is a problem for Mrs. Hawthorne," She winked, referring to her wife. "She shouldn't have left me alone."

Luz shook her head, letting the dog down and running a hand through her short hair. "Ah, dios mio." She mumbled. "Estas loca."

"Not too much, just the right amount."

"When is she coming back?"

"By the end of the week, doll, don't worry."

"Angel de la guardia no me desampares." She cried.

"Hey!"

"You know I'm right."

"Alright, alright," Her mom held her hands up in surrender. "Just a bit."

Luz bit at her lip. "I can't sleep again."

"More nightmares?" Said the woman as she tied up her greyed hair into a bun and slumped onto the couch.

"Yeah." She paused. "Just let me shower and we can watch a movie?"

Eda smiled softly. "Of course, kiddo."

                                                                                         ...............

Monday of that week, she found herself staring at a green flyer. The color of sports and Blights'. Ed and Em hadn't bothered to show up to school today.

"Amity?" Said a familiar voice.

She turned around, a scowl already in place. "What do you want?"

"You're standing in the way."

She glared at Luz but was secretly very grateful it hadn't been her friends who had caught her. She moved to the side but didn't leave. "Planning on attending so you can catch the shirts on fire?"

"No." She deadpanned. "I already told you that was an accident."

"Uh huhhh. Funny that no one believes a word you say."

"Because you made sure of that, you insufferable witch!" She normally avoided interactions with the purple haired classmate but today, she just wasn't in the mood to deal with her bull. If it had been anybody else, she wouldn't have raised her voice or said the first mean thing in her head but Amity Blight had a way of getting under her skin, bit by bit, until she became an itchy mess and burst.

Amity flinched slightly, as though her words affected her personally but recovered quickly. "Taking advice from Willow, now?"

Luz scoffed as she took off a ticket from the flyer and made to turn around but a hand on her wrist stopped her. Against all reason, she felt as though she had been doused in gasoline and was being set on fire. She shook off Amity's hand. "What is it you want from me? Is making my life hell not enough?"

"No. I want you to suffer like our team did. You ruined my brother's chance to impress our parents!"

"You've never said that before," she muttered, "I'm sorry."

"Apologies won't fix it. Do you have any idea— my parents barely see us and it was—one time!" Her cheeks flushed at her admittance. She felt stupid now that she had said the words out loud.

"I get it." Replied the Latina. "I'm sorry, okay? I just..we all have demons, Blight. You just can't see them. That's no reason to act like you do." She turned on her heel and walked down the hall, leaving a stunned Amity.

We all have demons, Blight. You just can't see them.

Shit. What had she done?
