Bucky's nerves had been shredded since he'd received the texts from Steve two days ago.
Sam kept giving him knowing looks, he regretted ever opening up to him, no matter how brief.
He couldn't help but feel a real bittersweetness towards what had happened.
Bucky was so happy for his best friend, that he'd got a wonderful woman he deserved more than anything in the world. But why, did it have to be someone he realised he was also falling for?
Life seemed so cruel to him sometimes.
As they'd boarded the jet back to the compound, Bucky had lingered in the back of the jet, skulking, mulling over everything. He needed to be away from Sam for a while who knew too much.
When he'd landed, he saw Steve waiting in the hangar which sent a new batch of adrenaline through his nervous system.
It must be serious.
Steve pats him on the back in greeting, a wide smile on his face. Bucky returns the gesture, although it doesn't quite meet his eyes.
"How was the mission Bud?" Steve asks as he too greets Sam who seems as if he's trying to avoid interacting with Steve. Bucky sighs.
"Relatively successful I'd say." Bucky murmurs back in response, watching carefully as Sam busies himself with unloading equipment. Steve frowns a little at his demeanour.
"You got a moment to talk?" He asks as Bucky swallows hard.
Bucky nods, gesturing for Steve to lead the way. He's still in his full tactical gear but he just wants this out the way.
Maybe Steve was letting him know you were upset and regretted the whole thing. It hadn't seemed like it at the time but then he hadn't seen you since your birthday. Maybe you'd changed your mind, had time to think about it.
Maybe it had broken you and Steve apart. Fuck. He couldn't handle that on his conscience.
Bucky's mind whirs with a million possibilities as Steve ushers him into a side room in the compound away from prying eyes and ears.
Steve shifts a little on the spot nervously, unsure where to start. Bucky waits silently.
Maybe Steve was about to tell him after what happened he couldn't be friends with him anymore.
His heart sinks.
Before his thoughts can continue escalating, Steve clears his throat.
"So um... I guess the first thing to say is umm...." Steve starts, a small smile playing on the corner of his mouth.
Bucky waits eagerly, it can't be bad if he's smiling...
"I'm engaged Buck." He breathes out suddenly, breaking out into a full blown grin now.
