The story of Regulus and Severus' friendship was quite a touching one.

It all started back in Severus' fifth year. It would have been he worst year of his life if  Regulus hadn't been there because his former best friend Lily Evans, ended their seven years of friendship.

Severus had always loved and adored her like a little sister. At some point, he might have even thought of her romantically but later realized it was only platonic with a capital P. His world had been shattered when Lily slammed the door of the Gryffindor common room in his face after he called her a slur. He would have done anything to go back in time and change things. Things like not being so close with a group of future death eaters, being so interested in the dark arts, but he understood that he had done what he did.

Though that never made him feel better. He regretted it the second the word 'mudblood' left his mouth but it had been said clearly and loudly in front of half of the student body of Hogwarts. He had no excuses for his words and no way out of this.

Therefore, he did what his heart told him to do: go find Lily immediately and apologize profusely. It had worked in a few cases before, unfortunately, this was the last straw for her. She was enraged and didn't know where her kind and patient best friend had gone and who this imposter was so she broke off all ties with the boy and spun on her heels to stomp away angrily back to her common room.

He heart was left to shambles and he ran.

He kept running.

Up the stairs to the Astronomy Tower.

Once he got there, he took a deep breath and let his tears fall. They rolled down his face and dropped onto his robes. His knees gave out and he screamed. He screamed with all his rage and fury directed at himself, but he screamed mainly with sadness. In one moment, his life was turned around, all the light was gone and he was left in the darkness, alone and unwanted.

He wobbly stood up and leaned over the railings of the Tower. Hogwarts to him was a place of happiness and misery, happiness from Lily and misery from the Marauders, together, they balance everything out. Severus wasn't too depressed nor was he too joyful. Now, they wouldn't be balanced anymore, it would just be full of misery.

He was told before that suicide was a coward's way out. He wasn't a coward, he told himself. That didn't stop himself from feeling numb, from feeling like he just wanted it to be all over with. He knew Lily wasn't going to forgive him, he didn't deserve her anyways, she was too good to last. He got out some pieces of parchment from his old and worn out bag and a pen.

Dear Lucius, Regulus and Lily,

Every day, I am asked the same question, 'How are you?' and I always respond with the same answer, 'I'm fine.' but I am not. I enjoyed the time I spent with you even if it didn't last. Thank you for making my life happier, please don't cry when I'm gone. Tell everyone that I'm sorry for everything I've ever done to them. Lily please take all of my belonging and do whatever you want with them, burn them, throw them into the ocean but leave the books for Regulus. Lucius take all my money even if it's very little, thank you again for all the things you three have done for me.

Love,

Severus

Severus put his bag on top of the note so that it wouldn't fly away and climbed onto the railings and began to step forward when suddenly he heard rushed footsteps and heavy breathing and a person pulling him down from the railing. He recognized the messy black hair of Regulus Black.

'What the hell do you think you're doing?!' Regulus exclaimed with tears in his eyes.

'I'm done with this.' Severus tried to pull himself out of the other boy's tight grip around his waist.

'Done with what?'

'EVERYTHING!' Severus snapped.

'I'm not letting you go, you fucking dumbass. You are going to go downstairs with me to the dorm and I am going to be keeping a close eye on you.'

'You're not the matron. Now, go away.'

'Just go to sleep with me. Please. I beg you.' Regulus cried, Severus knew it was hard for a member of the most noble and ancient family of Black to beg. He looked down at the desperate boy clinging to his robes.

Maybe there was something to live for. From then on, Regulus followed Severus around like a little puppy and often had discussions with him about potions. It was their common interests and that blossomed into a deep friendship.
