At the crack of dawn the next day, I got to work. By the end of the day, my Pokémon were strong enough to wipe out every wild Pokémon on the route with one hit.

The following morning, I calmly walked into the Saffron Gym. Sabrina had no particular reaction to my entrance, but merely blinked, "I've been expecting you, Mr. Phoenix. I am the leader of the Saffron Gym, Sabrina. We shall skip any unnecessary formalities. I'm certain you don't have a problem with that."

"Not at all," I growled at her, "Let's begin."

We sent out our Pokémon. I sent out Charizard, and she sent out Mr. Mime. Mr. Mime's first move was to begin forming a light screen around it to protect it from any of Charzard's attacks. Charizard used Flamethrower multiple times, all of them futile. I had to think of a way to get past this little problem. It was not long before I got an idea.

I withdrew Charizard and sent out Dragonair. Dragonair pummeled the screen with Blizzard. Mr. Mime took no damage, but the screen was frozen solid. Knowing exactly what to do next, my Pokémon picked itself up and used Body Slam on the ice. The combination of the shock from Dragonair's attack along with being pelted with the shards of ice was enough to knock Mr. Mime out cold.

Sabrina's second Pokémon was Slowbro. I already knew how I was going to go about this. Dragonair used Thunderbolt, leaving Slowbro without a chance. The Hermit Crab Pokémon fell out about two minutes after being summoned.

"You have done well thus far," Sabrina commended me, "but you have yet to fight my strongest Pokémon!"

She sent out Alakazam. If there was one thing I knew about the Psi Pokémon, it was that it had a very high special defense, but very low normal defense. Dragonair body slammed its opponent, but Alakazam remained standing. I was extremely confused until I noticed a light glimmer surrounding Alakazam. It was using Reflect. Dragonair tried to land another hit on it, but Alakazam teleported to another end of the battlefield. Then, as if by magic, the scuff marks on its body caused by my Dragonair's attack vanished, which I recognized immediately as Alakazam's Recover ability.

I needed another solution, and I knew exactly what it was. I withdrew Dragonair and sent out Gyarados. I saw Alakazam begin its reflect attack again, and this time I was prepared.

"Gyarados," I smirked, "Thrash."

Gyarados went into a total rampage. It had at Alakazam viciously, slamming it back and forth across the room, not giving Sabrina a chance to communicate for retaliation. After about five minutes, Alakazam was slammed on the ground, completely unconscious. Sabrina was astonished. I was not sure if it was because her strongest Pokémon had fallen, or because my Gyarados had gone completely psychotic. After I returned it to its Pokéball, Sabrina walked up to me, handed me the the Marsh Badge, and walked away without saying a word.
