⬜ Safflower extracts were used to dye the wrappings of Egyptian mummies.

⬜ Chinese herbalists used the plant to invigorate the blood and reduce pain.

⬜ During the 19th century, the red dye produced from the safflower was known as carthamine. Today it is known as Natural Red 26. Both the red and yellow dyes were important to textile manufacturing before the advent of cheaper aniline dyes.
