💛 Valerian is also known as setwall, garden heliotrope and all-heal in English, Valerianae radix in Latin, Baldrianwurzel in German and phu in Greek. The word phew, meaning "to express disgust at an unpleasant odour", is possibly derived from the latter usage.

💛 In medieval Sweden, the herb was often placed in the wedding clothes of the groom to ward off the "envy" of the elves (probably to ward off the plague too).

💛 The plant is a favourite with the larvae of some species of Lepidoptera, including the grey pug (butterflies and moths really do be nature's original picky eaters, eh)?

💛 Valerian is sometimes used to flavour foods and drinks such as root beer.

💛 Valerian is a frequent ingredient in love and harmony spells and potions.
