⬛ The plant is sometimes called cuckoo's meate, from the old belief that the bird used the herb to clear its voice. In Scotland, it is known as gowkemeat. R. acetosa is also known as spinach dock, sour dock, sour grabs or sour grass. R. scutatus also goes by the names buckler-leaf sorrel, buckleaf sorrel and shield-leaf sorrel.

⬛ Noted diarist and gardener John Evelyn wrote that sorrel imparted "so grateful a quickness to the salad that it should never be left out".

⬛ The sap of garden sorrel can be used as a laundry-stain remover.
