I awoke slowly. At first, I had forgotten about the events of yesterday and last night. That is, until I spotted the jungle trees surrounding me, and it all came flooding back into my mind. Dread filled me, as I remembered that we were lost. Lost because of me, and my dumb actions.
Suddenly, I also remembered how me and Buggy had fallen asleep. I'd allowed him to wrap his arms tightly around me, to hold me against his body. I shouldn't have done that. I looked for Buggy, half expecting to find him still wrapped around me.
However, we had seemingly shifted positions. Buggy was lying on his back, I was lying on my side, but with my head laying against his chest, facing the trees. I became aware of his strong arm which was wrapped around me, tightly holding me against his body. I also found that his jacket was wrapped around me, and only me.
I felt a little guilty about that. Had I completely stolen it during the night? He didn't seem to mind it too much. I also felt guilty that, once again, I was crossing a boundary. I was allowing him to hold me. This time, it felt even more intimate. We were wrapped against one another like a couple.
For a moment, I imagined my parents being able to see me now. That only served to make my guilt grow. I should have pulled away from him, but once again I allowed myself to indulge in crossing the boundary that I had set.
"Did I steal your jacket in the night?" I asked him, curious.
I noticed then that the sun was out, and the heat was building in the air. It wasn't half as cold as it had been last night. Although, if I had stolen it during the night, he probably had a hard time sleeping.
"I gave it to you. You were shivering the whole night."
He said it so nonchalantly, like it was a no brainer to give me his jacket. When he was soft and kind like this, it only left me more confused. How could this man, the man who gave me his jacket so that I could stay warm while he was left cold, be the same man who had terrorised the town back there?
"Weren't you cold?"
He shifted, and I took my queue to sit up. He did the same. For a moment, we both sat side-by-side, not saying anything. Then, he began standing up. A part of me was sad, I already missed his touch. He made for a pretty comfortable bed.
"You heated me up," He told me, softly. He then seemed to realise what he said. "You're just very warm, is what I meant."
"You are, too." I held his jacket out towards him as I rose to my feet. "Here."
"Good news," He told me, pointing towards the sky. I immediately saw what he was pointing to, it was smoke. Billowing up towards the sky. "Follow that, and we should find the town. Or people, at least."
He took his jacket, slipping it on. We then began to walk, towards the smoke. There was enough of it that it was easy to follow, even over the tall trees.
"It's a lot of smoke."
He nodded his head. "It is. They must have been colder than we were."
I laughed at that. He was being nice to me, again. I liked it like this. If be could be like this all of the time, I could really see myself... liking him. Or at least not hating him.
"You don't think there's any big bugs around, do you?" I asked him, wanting to make conversation.
It had actually been on my mind since last night. Jungles were known to have some crazy big insects, and I wanted to avoid them at all cost.
