~*~*~*~*~*~

Charlie had grown fond of magic. He would study it relentlessly as a child, still doing so in his teen years. Everything changed when he was in a library one day. He had been looking through each second, soon scouring the restricted section. He had come across a variety of books; from occults to magic. Charlie left that day with a beginner's guide.

Sure people were born with magic and knew how to weild it right away, but there have been a few instances where that wasn't the case. Some people weren't born with such talent, despite it being possible to obtain it when growing up. However, Charlie's mom and sister, Tori, had been blessed with such talent. His dad had somehow lost his ability to do magic when he was a teenager, and his little brother didn't show any chance of gaining magical powers.

Regardless, Charlie was determined to see if he can awaken something inside of him. When he was younger, he had created a small bird after he stole one of his mom's spell books. When his parents walked in, they immediately him to an elder, who stated that it was a slim chance of him gaining magical powers. This made his parents both shocked, and eerie. His parents always did their best to discourage him from doing any sort of magic. If he did, he got punished.

Eventually, Charlie stopped trying for years. That wasn't until Tori had started to secretly teach him magic once he turned 10. They only did this when their parents were gone or asleep. Of course Tori hold him that everyone was graded on how strong they were, something Charlie thought was silly at the time, but now craved to be the best of the best.

"Do you think I'll be as strong as you?" Young Charlie asked, hope in his eyes.

"One day," Tori nodded. "One day you will be, Charlie."

__________

It was late at night when Charlie was looking through the spell book he found at the library. Tori had warned him about how if the spell was strong, then it's more likely he's gonna feel drained and weak. Charlie wasn't very fond of hearing about that when Tori shared that information. Nonetheless, Charlie would always stay up trying to practice. However, the more he the did do it, the more he realized how it wasn't working. It frustrated him.

Charlie remembers how easy it was for him to do as a child, but seems as if that wasn't the case anymore. Letting out a groan, Charlie tangled his fingers in his hair as he flipped through the pages. Giving up, Charlie slammed the book closed before resting on the book. He thought back to his childhood. He remembered the first thing he had ever done with magic. He wondered if it was alive and free, or quickly faded when he got caught. Regardless, he felt envy of the bird either way.

Noticing the time, Charlie let out a frustrated groan. He didn't want to sleep. He wanted to prove he could do magic. He needed to clear his head, that was all. Getting up from his desk and hiding the book away, Charlie put on his kicks and light coat before sneaking down the stairs. When he was about to open the front door, he heard footsteps approaching. panicking, he quickly pushed himself against the closet wall, counting their steps. Once he was sure the coast was clear, Charlie left the house.

The first thing he was greeted with when arriving outside was the mushroom-like trees in front of his neighbor's house. His eyes lit up like fireworks, clearly intrigued. Charlie knew some people focused on using their magic for decorations and aesthetics, but he never thought he would see it. He studied his neighbor's house and noticed the variety of changes. What started off as a normal house, had turned into something whimsical. They had fairy lights that were around their front porch, with the door having a leaf wreath. The garden was filled with herbs to make potions, some Charlie knew and some he didn't. Their roof looked like the top of a mushroom with a small chimney on top.
