Pansy and I have been crouched in this classroom for what seems like forever. The wards on the door are some of my best, but we can't stay here long. Laying motionless on the other side of the room are 6 death eaters, fallen subject to our curses and hexes. Our faces are darkened by the dirt and the dust, our hands speckled with blood of our opponents. This moment seems almost peaceful amid the shouts and screams and explosions echoing from beyond the door.
"Amara, we can't stay here." Pansy pants from beside me.
"I know, we need to wait for Mattheo's signal and then we can run."
"How did we even get here? We were so careful." She hits the desk beside her. "So fucking careful."
"It doesn't even matter now. As soon as we get out we can figure out a plan."
"We should fight back." Hatred gleams in her eyes.
"Pansy, Harry Potter is dead. They've practically won this war. They know what we did, and as soon as we enter that battlefield we are fucking dead."
None of us know how Voldemort found out about the betrayal. Me and Mattheo crafted it so perfectly. It was late February. We'd had enough, it was a tough decision but we convinced the others eventually. Slowly, we leaked the information. It was anonymous and it was never in big amounts. Like Pansy said, we were so fucking careful. Now its May, and they know, and if we don't get out of here soon, they will kill us all.
Something interrupts me, the bracelet on my right arm tingles, almost burns.
"We've got to go." Picking up Pansy's hand, I head for the door and swing it open violently. Now we run.
War isn't what I thought it would be. I expected to be dragged down, held back by the sights of my fellow dead students. Perhaps I would cry or stand and watch each one of them as the light left their eyes and their chests stopped rising and falling, and instead, flatlined. However, in the heat of the moment I suppose, I don't. Instead I run. We all do.
I don't even recognise this castle anymore, this place I have called my home for the best part of 8 years. Its not very Slytherin of me, but it was my home. Malfoy manor was my house. 2 very different things. Draco thinks the same, although I know he would never admit it.
I can only take in so much while I run. Bodies are littered around the corridors like debris. People I knew, people I didn't. It makes no difference; they are all dead. Glass crunches under my boots, rocks crack under my feet. Hexes fly at me left right and centre, from all sides. No one knows what side we are on. Neither do we.
Pansy's hand is curled around mine like a vice. I think even if I was hit by a hex, and flew sideways, she would not let go. She was scared for this moment, she told me that. My feet continue forward as we move together, I don't even have time to think about where we are going. My other hand clutches my wand tightly, prepared to defend us both if I have to stop running.
Spilling out into the courtyard, we both stop. Its only momentarily, but its a stop, nonetheless. Spells, curses fly out from everywhere that I can see, streaks of red and green shooting in all directions. Keeping my eyes slightly up, I dont even look down to see how many bodies lay on the floor.
"Amara!" Mattheo calls from the right side of the courtyard.
I feel Pansys head snap around simultaneous with mine, to see Mattheo and Draco pressed against the wall, fear populating their eyes. We begin to run again. Before weve reached them, they turn, and disappear through the small gap in the corner.
"Am?" Pansy begins.
"Dont stop." I instruct, heading directly for the little gap. Last minute, I jerk my hand forwards, pulling Pansy to the front, and shove her towards the small opening. Almost instantly, she climbs through. I dont hesitate to look back, and I follow her.
"Wheres Theo?" I hear Pansys panicked voice as I drop from the gap onto the grass below.
"I dont know." Mattheo replies. His eyes flicker back to me as I pull up alongside her. I survey him quickly, he doesnt seem to be injured, apart from a cut across the left of his forehead. Dracos hair has seen better days.
"Well we have to go back and get him." She continues.
"Funny how you didnt think about going back for me?" A new voice comes from behind.
We both flick around, to see Theo lowering an amused Enzo from the gap we just came from. Enzo also has a gash on his head, but his is streaming with blood and his eyes cant seem to focus on anything. Doesn't deter the smile on his face.
"What the fuck happened?" Mattheo passes me, catching Enzo and holding him upright.
"Finally got bored of his moaning and decided to lamp him one." Theo chuckles, jumping down from the wall.
"Should have let me have a go." Draco huffs from behind us.
I walk forwards, meeting Enzo and pulling his face to the side to get a better look at the damage.
"It's not as bad as it looks, I can probably heal it now if you stop fucking moving." Lifting my wand up to his head, my other hand holds his face firmly to the side. I see Pansy and Theo re-unite out of the corner of my eye, and I take into notice how close me and Mattheo are right now. Nothing has happened between us since that night last year.
"Amara we need to go." Draco says, not hiding the impatience in his voice.
"Give me a fucking second."
"I say we just leave him here." Pansy adds, laughing to herself.
"I say we dont just leave him here." Enzo begins before I yank him face back into place.
"Done." I say, standing back. Hes still wobbly on his feet and propping himself upright on Mattheos arm.
It doesnt take long before the wall above us explodes into a flash of dust and rocks.
"Fuck." Mattheo exclaims, pulling both himself and Enzo away from the wall.
"We really need to fucking go." Draco continues, rapidly stepping backwards.
"I think we all got that mate." Theo adds, pulling Enzos other arm over his head and beginning to run.
The shouting behind us stays constant as we all barrel for the apparition point. Hexes and curse fly past us as we keep running. I throw the occasional curse over my shoulder, hoping to hit something or someone. None of us say a word, our eyes set on the treestump ahead. Considering Mattheo and Theo are carrying Enzo, they are doing a pretty good job to keep up.
The wind howls against us as we race down the hill, away from the carnage of the castle. It makes my eyes sting, I can feel tears pooling in my outer corner, threatening to spill down the side of my face. Pansy reaches the stump first, reaching her hand out to Draco to apparate quickly. They disappear with a loud crack. I arrive at the stump next, but wait, hurling curses and hexes at our pursuers as the rest of the boys hurry forward.
"Reducto." I hit one in the chest, sending the death eater flying backwards, unconscious, halfway up the hill.
"Incarcerous." Thick ropes wrap themselves around the next one as he plummets to the ground.
Something hits me, slicing deep into my shoulder. Yelping in pain, I spin to my left. Before I can retaliate, Im met face to face with Mattheo, who grabs my hand and pulls me into his apparition.
Just before apparate, I lock eyes with my father, watching me as I disappear.
