2nd May 1998
Mattheo is looking at me weird. I can see it out of the corner of my eye. He's sat on the sofa to my right, his foot resting on his knee, leaning back with his arm laid across the back of the sofa. My eyes stay trained on the fireplace, as the flames dance around each other.
"Amara?" He says, it's gentle, meaningful.
I move my head around, to make contact with his eyes. He's looking down at me as I'm sat on the floor.
"What are you thinking?" He continues.
"Too many things." My head drifts back, my eyes falling down to the hands in my lap.
"Name me one."
"Something is wrong, I can feel it."
"Something?"
"That last meeting. It's sitting heavy with me. I've got this off feeling, like-"
Draco comes bursting through the common room door, cutting my sentence off. Mattheo rises, reacting instantly to Draco's panicked demeanor.
"Harry Potter's been spotted in Hogsmeade."
"You fucking kidding." I breathe out, also standing from the floor.
"Everyone's talking about it." Pansy walks in behind Draco, followed by Enzo and Theo. "Snape knows too, he was talking to Alecto and Amycus, I think they are going to gather everyone in the hall."
"It's like past 1 in the morning. Can't they wait till tomorrow for this shit." Enzo walks further in, slumping down into the central sofa by the fireplace.
"Sorry Enzo, let me just send an owl to Voldemort and tell him to cut out the relentless killing and searching for Harry Potter until tomorrow, shall I?" Pansy directs towards him sarcastically.
"We have to be prepared now." I sit down next to Enzo. "If Harry Potter was in Hogsmeade there's a high chance he's coming here. If Voldemort finds out then he's gonna come here too, and then. Then I don't even know."
"What would we do?" Draco pauses. "Would we stand with the order, or would still fake it and stand with our parents?"
"Okay!" Theo claps, making way towards the empty spot next to me. "This is getting assumative, yeah, let's cross that bridge when we come to it."
"Did you just say... assumaptive?" Pansy furrows her eyebrows.
"That's not a word." Mattheo stares at Theo, confused.
"You get the point, do you not?"
Everyone begins to sit, and momentarily it feels calm, like we are all 14 again and Voldemort wasn't a concern for any of us.
Obviously Mattheo has a strong connection with Voldemort, but even he didn't know the Dark Lord was back until Cedric Diggory was killed in the tournament. I remember that night very clearly, Theo having to lock Mattheo in the dorm room as he panicked and broke shit. The next day he was stoic, none of us knew what was going through his head. Ever since then, he'd listened to his father's every word. Or so I thought, until we decided to betray him.
Mattheo never got given huge tasks, it would be too suspicious with him being Voldemort's fucking son and all. That duty was offloaded on Draco, followed closely by me. Sometimes Theo was given jobs, but they were small. Pansy and Enzo attended meetings, following in their parents footsteps but were normally left alone.
It's not long before the door to the common room swings open, revealing both Amycus and Alecto, from the dark passageway. Everyone rises instantly.
"Headmaster Snape is calling a school-wide meeting. In the great hall." Alecto sneers. Her eyes pierce your skin, everything about the twins makes your hair stand on end.
"Thankyou for letting us know, Alecto." Mattheo nods, we will be on our way in a second."
Both the twins became ruthless after taking teaching positions here, but never dared to stand up to Mattheo. We were made to help them on some days, Pansy was made to crucio Neville Longbottom a few weeks ago. We've all had a turn. We can't be see to refuse, being Voldemorts 'top child gang' or whatever Enzo called us one time. Everyone's grown to hate us, fearing that we are all going to turn out like our parents.
The twins give us an approving look, more of a snarl, before heading back towards the door.
"Fuck." Theo whispers, rubbing his forehead.
"It's fine, we've had meetings before." Enzo shrugs.
"Not when Harry fucking Potter had been spotted in Hogsmeade." I reply, sighing outwardly. "This could be it."
"And what exactly is 'it'?" Theo rubs his forehead.
I don't reply.
"We should go." Mattheo mutters, staring at the door.
Taking a deep breath, I walk through the middle of the group, following in the path of the twins. I just know this isn't going to be good.
__________
The hall is pretty much full by the time we got here. Each house has been split, standing in blocks, silent with their heads to the floor. There is a significant less amount of students here, the majority not returning. I still don't understand why a lot of them did come back this year. Slytherin house is the largest group.
The Carrow twins stand at the front of the room, pacing back and forth, and Snape in nowhere to be seen. We form a line, behind the rest of our house, joining in the solemn activity, waiting for our headmaster to appear.
It takes a while, but I hear the door opening behind us. No one dares to turn around. Snape's footsteps echo through the hall as he walks through the middle of the houses, to the front. He passes us, I see him reach the steps, and turn around to address us all.
"Many of you are surely wondering, why I have summoned you, at this hour. He begins, monotone and depressing. "It's come to my attention that earlier this evening, Harry Potter was sighted in Hogsmeade."
A small wave of chatter ripples amongst the students.
"Now!" He begins again, immediately shutting it down. "Should anyone, student or staff, attempt to aid Mr Potter, they will be punished in a manner consistent with the severity, of their transgression furthermore, any person found, to have knowledge of these events, who fails to come forward, will be treated, as, equally guilty."
He pauses again, before taking down the steps slowly, to parade down the center of the hall.
"Now, then. If anyone here has any knowledge of Mr Potter's movements this evening, I invite them to step forward." A moment of silence. "No?" Another moment of silence.
Harry Potter steps out of the crowd.
Audible gasps fill the hall, yet Snape's face doesn't drop in the slightest.
Potter begins to speak, but I don't hear it. My head is pounding and my hands are sweating. This isn't fucking good. If Harry is here, then Voldemort is probably already on his way.
People burst into the hall, standing behind Potter like a fucking clan. Shouting, yelling, accusatory words fly around. Until Snape draws his wand and McGonagall thrusts herself forwards, covering Harry like a shield. Each house throws themselves back towards the walls. We take longer to get back, struggling to process the information.
Sparks fly from only her wands, as the hurl curses repeatedly towards Snape. He doesn't retaliate, only blocks them. No one can do anything but gasp.
One of the spells rebound, hitting the Carrow twins simultaneously. They fall to the floor like rag dolls, and everyone takes even more steps backwards. Snape pauses, only momentarily, as his gaze drifts in our direction. Our eyes lock, and his mouth opens.
"He knows."
Then he's gone, into the mist of a death eater, he hurls himself at the window, smashing the glass and disappearing into the night.
