From my little age till I was a teen, my parents had a restaurant, or rather, a bar, which they open every Christmas and their niche was Chicken. Not Chicken Soup or Nuggets, just cooked and well spiced Chicken. They sell it with Beer and Soft drinks at the centre of our little town. My dad started the business before he married my mum and had us. People from far and wide come to enjoy the Chicken every Christmas season. It became part of Christmas.
When we were old enough, my parents were already in their 40s and they were thinking of stopping the business but without it, it felt like Christmas is never complete and with time we got used to it.
There wasn’t a secret recipe they used, they just prepared the Chicken and made it ready for customers. It was a nice place to come and reminisce and chat with friends and hang out, plus it was at the centre of the town. It was a childhood memory.
My mother told me that my dad took over from his mother who was a cook. He would run errands for her and he turned out to be an expert at cooking. While my dad was doing that, my mum was on the very far part of the country helping her mother with her food business. Her mother’s own was seasonal, if its corn season, then they will be roasting corn for their customers, if it’s not, they will be frying bean cake or something else. They were popular in the area, she told us.
I grew up learning from my mum and grandmothers. I started cooking when I was thirteen, that was when my mother allowed me to. I was always at home, so I started with simple foods and then to soups and I found cooking interesting. It is a hobby, a hobby I am born with and into.
I noticed I am not a foodie, because I have seen people who actually devour food but surely, I love it when people enjoy the food I prepare, just as I enjoyed writing this book. I always have writers block when I am writing, but it didn’t take a lot of time to prepare this book.
I hope you enjoy and gain some knowledge from this book just as I enjoyed writing it.
