Chapter 26- The Mask We Wear

       Camila leans in and whispers in Evelyn's ear as I decide to distance myself because I am embarrassed about crying earlier

   We all are gathered in Evelyn's living room about to head out for the new years masquerade.

  "Is that my future daughter in law?" May comes in camera in hand and asks.

   She isn't going take pictures is she?

  "Not quite." Axial interrupts throwing her arm around Evelyn like she's done to me plenty of times in the past.

   I just lean against the door frame arms crossed as Evelyn eyes me worryingly.

  "Okay, I want a picture of everyone together." May orders arranging us around and lecturing her daughter about her posture.

   My surprise awaits us in the drive way as I order a limousine for all of us to share. Mostly because I want to be near Evelyn without Camila taking her for herself.

  Evelyn even makes it a point to sit next to me and holds my hand. Is she just showing me attention because she feels bad for me?

  I hate it when my insecurities begin to show.  

  Axial takes notice of our joined hands and looks visibly upset about it. Is she jealous of me or Evelyn?

   Meanwhile Karin and Camila are going back and forth about who's better Damon or Klaus off the Vampire Diaries.

  Evelyn looks annoyed at the two of them bickering like little kids so I ask if she's okay.

  "Shouldn't I be the one asking you that?" Evelyn asks raising an eyebrow at me.

  Axial makes it a point to throw her arm casually around Evelyn's shoulder while looking at me.

    She should really stop looking at me like she wants me. I want to just jab her eyes out.

   Exiting the limo Camila wastes no time in trying to hold Evelyn's hand when she gets slapped away by Karin.

  For a best friend he sure did act like a protective boyfriend over Evelyn.

  "Did you forget she's my date?" Karin tsk at Camila waving his finger in her face as she reaches out to pull on it.

  He did kind of deserve that.

  "We will see you inside. Don't forget I have dibs on the first dance." I say to Evelyn winking at her.

    I want to honor Evelyn by letting her have time with her best friend. I am sure Axial, Camila and myself have been suffocating her.

   Unfortunately, I have to make an appearance for my father anyways.

     It's easy to spot my father's tall stature among his guests. Of course he's being social trying to look like he's a decent man.

   "Fiona." My father greets me as he introduces me to his guests.

   "Pleasure to me you." A man that looks like he's in his forties states as I just give a small smile to be polite. 

   This man has ash blonde hair and his eyes has a familiar look to them like I've seen them somewhere before .

  "You know Walter, I have a young daughter close to your daughters age. We just recently moved back here." He explains as my eyes averts from them to Evelyn who's with Matt of all people.

   "Maybe my daughter can show yours around school once they start back." My father suggest as my attention wasn't with them anymore.

   I excuse myself making my father glare at me and come to Evelyn's aid.
