Hyunjin looked over the sea of red and white caps and gowns. The chatter around him was endless. There were proud families, crying babies, huge cameras, and just way too much chaos. It made him question why he was there for the millionth time. A big banner welcomed everyone to the graduation of Levanter College.
Hyunjin shifted on one of the hard plastic seats, scanning the expansive gymnasium and the seats below. But there was no point in trying to find Jeongin. With a sigh, he rubbed the back of his neck. "Test test," someone spoke into the microphone.
The gymnasium seemed larger than life itself, its vastness filled with rows upon rows of seating, stretching as far as the eye could see. Usually, there were D1 basketball or volleyball matches held here, but today was reserved for a far more emotional event.
Rays of sunlight filtered through the high windows, casting a warm glow upon the room. And the faint sound of a distant fan whirring in the background added to the melancholy.
.
The ceremony began and the head of the university got on stage to preach about good choices, opportunities in life, what this class brought to the history of the college. For everyone who cared about it, an emotional speech. Jeongin never talked about college if it wasn't to complain about it. So Hyunjin didn't know, didn't care, and didn't feel like letting the words pinch the jealousy in his chest.
.
"It would be the best way for you to get away from the club and those living conditions and actually do something with your life." Jisung's words echoed through his head. That man would not stop bothering him all day. Hyunjin was pathetic enough to cry a few tears. And to doubt himself when he was hiding from the world wrapped in a blanket, if what he said and did was really the correct way. Which in hindsight, obviously it was.
But still, Jisung would not leave his mind, especially not after seeing him all over the news. He signed a very risky deal with the potential for a high outcome. Finance and politics were going crazy. One article talked about Hyunjin. It was speculating if he was some sort of bodyguard to him, although he appeared like he could do everything but that. They speculated if Hyunjin was another business partner of his.
Well kinda... used to be... Hyunjin shook his head and focused on the graduation.
Of course, as a little boy, he had dreamed about college too. In fact, this was his dream school to attend. Life took a turn and to Hyunjin he found his true calling in the club. But as the guy on stage continued he imagined he could be up there. How he would be, receiving his own diploma and celebrating this significant moment.
But he was here to do so for Jeongin. Last minute, because he forgot about it.
.
Regret washed over him, a bittersweet reminder of who he was. Looking down at his worn sneakers, Hyunjin replayed the countless times Jeongin acted out of pure selflessness to help him. Like a younger brother taking care of his sibling who didn't know any better. Which was frustrating because of course, he knew better. He was the older one after all. He had more experience in life than Jeongin did. Jeongin was the one who didn't know how to act at the Penthouse.
Now one after another, each name of the over five hundred students was called out. For each name, there was some sort of supporter going crazy in their seat. Screaming "I love you!" "That's my boy!" "We're so proud of you!"
The big screens showed all of their bright smiles, some funny dances as they walked across the podium. For a second Hyunjin felt as if he was watching a movie. You know when it gets so realistic you think it's real life and you question why your life doesn't go that way?
