seemed to make time stop. The world stilled around Tom, and yet he felt dizzy, his mind spinning. The knife he was holding slipped out of his pumpkin-covered hands. Its clatter hit the cold marble floor and ricocheted around them. Evelyn stared at the knife, but not once did she raise her eyes to his.

"You are in love with me?" Tom asked hesitantly, quietly. He wasn't sure if he wanted to ask and ruin her truth, and yet, he needed to know. He hadn't decided if her answer would draw them closer or finally give him the sense to step away.

"No," Evelyn breathed, and then before he could get mad, she rushed into an explanation. "I wish I were, that I could. Merlin, you don't know how much I wish I could just give in to you." Her eyes shot up to his as if pleading for him to listen, to understand. "We can never be the people we pretended to be today. You cannot love, and I cannot give my heart away to someone who would be so careless with it."

As she spoke the words, Tom knew that wasn't what he had wanted her to say. He took a stuttering breath as he took a step back. The words seemed to cause him more hurt than he had been expecting. The whole thing made him want to tear flesh from bone at how far he had fallen into his weakness.

Evelyn stepped closer to him. Her long fingers reached out for his cheek, but she drew back just as fast. She looked down at her dirty hands and shook her head.

"Maybe we should get cleaned up?" She offered and turned away.

Tom reacted without thought and gripped her arm, forcing her to swirl back into him. Both of their breaths became heavy as their bodies touched far more than Tom had meant. But, he couldn't deny that he didn't like her this close to him. Didn't like the way her hands gripped his plain black shirt in a vice. How her eyes looked up at him with longing and hurt and understanding.

"I am a complete and utter fool, Evelyn," Tom gasped, and then before he could stop to think, he continued. "I have become obsessed with you. I think about you even when I dream, and I hate it. I don't know if I am waiting for the impossible or if I even feel anything at all. I don't know what this is, and it scares me. More than anything, fear is such a waste of my time." Tom threw his one hand up, annoyed at his overwhelming feelings. "You make me think I could give this all up. That I would be fine being normal and insignificant, and I know you know I can't. I do not know what I want, Evelyn, or if I can give you what you want. I just know that if you walk away now and I had not have told you this, then I would lose whatever twisted, complicated thing it is that we are to each other."

Evelyn's breathing caught. She stared at him open-mouthed. Her lips parted in such a delicious look of surprise. But then she righted herself, a frown over taking her lips.
