a benefit in being so cunning. Being so persuasive. There was a prize to gain when a poor orphan surrounded himself with the richest of the rich. Tom took no loss in pride when he used this gift to his advantage.

Calista Flint was an ideal girlfriend for a singular reason. Her family was a part of the sacred twenty-eight. She was the purest of the pure and although that didn't help her any when it came to looks or intelligence, she basically breathed money. And Tom, the poor thing, just needed these robes. He needed suits in order to go to balls. He needed to be loved and cared for, and Calista had been happily ready to bestow anything he wanted upon him.

That's why he stood now in the best wizarding dress robes money could buy. He had seen them in one of Calista's fashion magazines. At first, his interest in the magazines had been purely to find any outlet to distract himself enough to tune out Calista's constant chatter. Then, after a while, he had found them to his advantage. Nobody respected someone who wasn't well dressed. He had seen Evelyn use this very thing to her advantage multiple times.

The dress robes were more money than he had ever spent in his life, but when he brought them up to Calista, she ordered them without blinking. She had gushed for days about how excited she was to see the robes on him, how it would be the perfect thing to wear to a formal to meet her parents. Tom hadn't promised her anything of the sort, knowing that the dress robes had nothing to do with Calista at all. He had been thinking about this very night, the annual Slughorn Christmas Dinner, and Evelyn.

Evelyn, who was always in outfits so elegant, he wondered if it was really appropriate to wear around a school. Evelyn who walked down hallways, and people stared. She had never cared about looking overdressed because she knew what her looks did. She had always used it as an extra bit of power, and Tom, he wanted to do the same.

In the darkest part of his mind, he thought about what it would mean to catch Evelyn's eye. For her to believe he was someone she couldn't look away from. He knew he was handsome; he had been told too many times to count, but Evelyn never seemed to be affected the way the other girls were. She had never told him outright that she found him worth her time, and he supposed she never would because Evelyn would never admit something so foolish.

It angered Tom on a basic level, yet, like buying the robes, he would do anything to impress her. It was pathetic.

Tom studied himself in the mirror as he clasped the dark, velvet robes over the assembly. He liked how the outfit fit him pristinely, how the high turtleneck complimented the subtle fitness of his lean body, and how the matching black pants accentuated his long legs.

He had thought before, as he slipped on his black dress shoes, that it was quite funny how similar muggle fashion was to wizard high fashion. Yet, wizards seem incapable of disguising themselves within muggle society. Tom had seen a wizard in London before, and he had known right away he was one simply by the fact that he had been wearing pajamas under magenta traveling robes. Tom thought the man would be highly idiotic if he caught himself out in public in an outfit like that. It wasn't until a few months later that he saw the very same man on the front of the daily prophet that he knew the wizarding world needed him more than ever. The man was the Minister of Magic.
