"Destroy the body, construct the body, liberate the body. Destroy the mind, construct the mind, liberate the mind. Destroy the soul, construct the soul, liberate the soul." Damon said out loud while running on the track inside The Monitor facility. I think I got the destroy the body part covered." Damon said while wheezing. Lucas could be heard laughing in Damon's headset. "You need to be ready when we mark you." Lucas said "If you aren't physically and mentally ready you can literally die". "Well jeez that's encouraging". Damon said completely out of breath "This five mile a day thing is killing me." said Damon as he stopped. Panting and out of breath he put his hands on his knees.
A door opened from behind him on the opposite side of the track. It was Lucas. He walked up to Damon and smacked him on his back laughing "You hanging in there?" he said. Damon coughed and shook his head "I should've quit smoking months ago." He said as he stood up straight. "How much longer do I need to do this training?" Damon said. Lucas patted Damon on the shoulder and motioned for Damon to follow him. Damon followed and they sat down on a bench outside the track rings. "Can you explain the whole marking process to me again?" said Damon. Lucas nodded "Sure kid." as he pulled both his gloves off. Lucas opened his hands and flipped them over to reveal a red "X" on each of them. "These are the Monitor marks. They make you truly one of us.
This is what you're training to achieve. However, given this power too soon and you die, or worse". "Or worse?" Damon asked. "Yes," replied Lucas "if you are marked and not ready it can consume you and make you less than human. It can make you" Lucas paused as Damon sat listening intensely "Like a precursor". Damon fell back "What the hell? I thought you said you don't know how they were created!" Damon yelled. Lucas shook his head "We don't for the most part. This is the only way we know of how they come to be. You need to relax Damon; we haven't had anyone turn in over a hundred years". Damon leaned forward "So what do the marks actually do?" he asked.
Lucas chuckled "You'll learn all about it in due time. First you need to focus on being the best version of yourself you can be. It's like riding a bike. If you don't learn with the training wheels on first you'll fall over". Damon rolled his eyes "C'mon show me something!" he said. Lucas put his hands up and nodded "Alright, Alright." and stood up and motioned for Damon to follow him. They walked onto the track. "You count to three and we will race for four hundred meters." Lucas said. Damon nodded and got into position "Okay,1.......2........3!" he yelled as he took off running. He ran as fast as he could, almost stumbling. Breathing hard as he turned the corner of the loop of the track. He turned back to see Lucas still at the starting line.
Damon thought to himself "what?" as he ran. He pushed himself harder reaching ten miles per hour. He turned to his left. He was now two hundred meters done. Lucas was on the exact opposite side of the track. Lucas stretched his arms, yawned and got into position. He took his first step and crushed the concrete with his first leg, leaving a shoe imprint in the broken concrete. He tore off out of the start. Damon heard the ground break, and he turned around. Lucas was already 40 meters behind him. Damon's eyes got wide as Lucas caught up to him and zoomed past him running at least twenty-five miles per hour.
He looped around the last corner of the track and beat Damon in the race. Damon finished his lap while panting. He stopped "Okay, I'm done." he said. Lucas smiled and bent down. He jumped and cracked the ground beneath him. The force from it knocked Damon back on his back. Lucas had jumped to the ceiling of the track room which was at least 28 feet. He grabbed onto one of the supports from the ceiling and waved his hand. Damon sat in Awe. He let go and fell gracefully. He landed back on the ground with a THUD. There were crackles of electricity on his legs. "And this..." Lucas said as he pointed his open hand towards the wall ".....I am sure you remember". A spark came from the X on his hand which sent crackles of electricity up his forearm igniting sparks that danced around his hand. A loud BANG could be heard as Damon fell on his back again, ears ringing as a flash of light clouded his vision.
