Damon jolted forward out of bed and let out a slight yell. He was drenched in sweat. His entire bed felt like it had been tossed in a lake. Disoriented, he rubbed his eyes and looked over to his clock that read 3:06 a.m. "God damn it." he said as he swung his legs out of bed "It's been 14 years." Damon said softly. The only light in his room was from the moon which could be seen perfectly outside his window. He looked at his bedside table at the half-full pack of cigarettes that lay crinkled up next to a half empty lighter. "Ugh." he sighed as he opened up the drawer on the bedside table and pulled out nicotine patches. He opened the box and put one on. He put his head in his hands and said out loud "Will I ever be over that day"?
Damon slipped his slippers on, let out a yawn and stood up. Grabbing his dirty sheets from his bed he noticed the cars passing by. He stared out the window, sighed, and said out loud "Why the fuck did I let her convince me this was the place to move to"? Scoffing, he looked at his calendar on the wall that reflected a small amount of moonlight. It had the days of the month with an X through them all the way up to the current date which read August 19th, 2022. Underneath the 19th, in big, bolded letters it read Move-in day. Damon put his finger on the 19th. He then looked to the top half of the foldable calendar to see a picture of a lake with letters that said "Welcome to Minnesota! The land of 10,000 lakes."
Damon shook his head and turned around to exit his room. He took two steps and tripped over something in the dark. He fell to the ground and let out a "Damn it"! He stood up and flipped on his light switch angrily. There was a slight cut on his knee. He had tripped over a box labeled Bedroom. He sighed and his eyes glanced around his whole room. There were boxes everywhere. His walls were empty. All that could be seen were little holes where the thumbtacks that held up his posters used to be. He walked into the bathroom and flipped the light on to see more boxes with different labels. He opened a box and searched through it and found his first aid kit. He opened the kit and grabbed a band aid. Placing it on his knee he stood up and looked in the mirror. "I need a haircut" Damon thought as he pulled his hair behind his ears. It was almost to his shoulders. He tilted his head observing his beard that was very short, almost unnoticeable. He looked at his unclothed torso. He was skinny, not much muscle. He stretched his shoulder. "I have got to stop working so much he thought" as his shoulder pained him.
Damon walked down the stairs and put his sheets in the washer. Closing the washer, he walked out to the kitchen and searched for a snack among the miscellaneous boxes and tools on the counter. Finally, he saw a box of granola bars and opened it. Grabbing a bar, he went to the fridge and pulled out a bottle of water. He walked over to his desk, one of the only things still in his townhome, and sat down. He ate his granola bar and heard the honking of horns from outside on the highway. "Is this city ever quiet?" He said out loud. Damon opened his laptop and noticed he had three new messages. The first one came from his girlfriend Anna which was sent at 11:47PM "Hey you, I hope you're sleeping well. Your mom and I will be over at 8 a.m. sharp. I think Will said something about showing up too! Anyways I'm gonna get some sleep now ill see you in the morning"! Damon smiled and looked up at her profile picture. He couldn't help but smile at how pretty she looked. "How did I get you?" he said.
Damon replied back with a heart and a message that said, "Sounds good ill see you in the morning sweet dreams". He scrolled down to the next message which was from Will. The message read "Just cause you're my older brother doesn't mean I'm going to drop everything and help you. "I have a life too ya know, and it doesn't involve doing everything for you". Damon said to himself "Classic Will." as he rolled his eyes and liked the message. He then scrolled down to the last unopened message. It was from Orion Williams. It read "Hey bro! I'll be there early in the morning! You didn't think I'd forget about your big day did you"? Damon replied, "Of course not, appreciate you bro see you in the morning". Damon then looked at the time on his laptop that read 3:29 a.m. "Who needs sleep anyway." he thought as he took a bite of his granola bar. Damon then glanced out the window. He stood up and walked over to it. "In a way Minneapolis is kind of pretty." he thought, staring out at the lights. "But it certainly isn't Arizona." he said out loud. Damon took a sip of water and stared at the stars which were illuminated by the full moon. "Boston." he said out loud softly "Why didn't we just turn around". He turned around and sat back in the chair, placing the water by the laptop. He put his head in his hands and sighed. Then his phone rang from upstairs and startled him. Damon knocked his water onto his laptop and shouted "Shit!".
