Two figures clad head to toe in black fireproof clothing slowly inched towards a steel metal door at the end of the room. The room they were in resembled every other room in the building they were in. Blindingly bright fluorescent lights, white walls, floors so clean one could see their reflection.

One of them saw his frightened expression stare back at him from the floor. He would have given anything to switch places with his blurry reflection. Screams of agony echoed from beyond the door. The hairs on the back of his neck stood upright in sheer terror. Every cell of his body wanted to flee. Whether he chose to run or open the door, death awaited him if he wasn't careful.

Beyond the door was a temperature-controlled room there was something that could only be described as a monster. The room was specifically designed to incinerate her to ashes. They both flinched back when a thud was heard from beyond the door. The door, made of titanium steel, was easily breakable to the creature within.

She struggled against the chains that had been tied tightly against her limbs like a vice.

Her earth-shattering screams promised vengeance for whoever put her in there. They waited with bated breath for her head to disappear from the view of the window that let them see into the room. Their shoulders tensed and knees crouched as they prepared to storm into the room. He wondered what they would do with the remains, maybe toss them to the bottom of the sea. Or better yet, launch them into space.

Either way, after today, he would sleep peacefully knowing that this monster did not exist anymore. It had already served its purpose.

He took a deep inhale of the air that reeked of searing flesh. They exchanged a nod when the room had been silent for long enough. All they could hear was the cackle of the orange flames devouring the body. They slowly inched closer to the door.

If they hadn't been so hasty they would have heard the low growl being emitted from within the room. The chains lay in a slowly melting pile of silver next to her feet due to the smoldering heat of the room. The second a sliver of white light appeared in the burning room, Zero pounced. The two men tried to scamper away but were too late.

Her seared hands ripped everything she could grab. The scientists watching from the monitor rooms on the safer side of the building watched in pin-drop silence as the once-white room was painted red with blood. Their celebratory wine stood forgotten at the glass tables, for there was nothing to celebrate.

The two corpses had their limbs savagely torn from their bodies. Their screams of terror that had threatened to shake the earth dulled to the silence of a graveyard.

In the blink of an eye, the figure disappeared from the view of the cameras.

The menacing orange inferno from the room burned brighter. The flames danced across the building. It devoured everything they touched without discrimination. The building, the poor unsuspecting souls who slept and those who watched. The dark secrets that should never see the light of day turned to ash. They all became no more as the fire completed its waltz of death.

Its only audience was the rubble and ash that remained.

Zero was covered head to toe in black ashes. The white clothing on her blistered body had been reduced to shreds, providing evidence that she had lost control. A smoky taste lingered in the air as she watched her old life fall apart in mere seconds.

She spared one final longing look as memories invaded her mind. She saw glimpses of herself. Her life had been a dark meaningless cycle of suffering. Fate was adding to the cycle by taking away the only people she considered family. The blackened ceiling had collapsed on top of the places where they were.  She knew they were long gone.

A single tear escaped from her eyes.  She hesitantly turned and headed towards the cluster of twinkling lights in the distance. She hoped against all odds that she would finally get the chance to be the one thing she had always dreamed about in her tiny dark cell.

A human.
