In this day and age, soul marks are seen as a curse rather than something to look forward to. Parents have cursed and wept on the day of their child's birth, as soul marks are usually present the moment you're born.

But sometimes, it takes longer for one to show, as soul marks only appear once their soul mate is born.

Soul marks take the form of a full name, written in the handwriting of their soulmate, and while this is only rumored, it is said that the state of the handwriting can indicate when you'll meet them. Another hint at your relationship with you soulmate, as there are all sorts of relationships you can have with one, is the color of the writing which comes in a wide array. This color describes your relationship towards them, but most have yet to be fully studied. So many of the colors meanings are left to speculation.

Satoru Suzuki is one of the "lucky" few on Earth who has lived so long and have yet for any soul marks to show. (And trust me, he's looked.)

Or, he was.

As Momonga, and now Ainz Ooal Gown who's been transported into New World, the delicate handwriting etched into his arm seems to mock him.

The warm pink letters that bordered on a pale rose which spelled, Neia Baraja.

Ainz couldn't help but feel relieved, if not a bit hopeful. While he was considered lucky in his last life, finding out he had a soulmate after losing all of his friends would lift anyone's spirits. Especially when your mark is such a light color.

Pinks tended to represent a kind of "loving" relationship, and with the deeper the color, the more serious the relationship.

A light pink like this likely meant this would be a platonic relationship. And a positive one, thank goodness.

However, the color of the writing is based entirely on the bearer's feelings towards said soulmate. Ainz has no idea how his soulmate will feel about him... And considering he's a skeleton, he doubts their first thoughts will be anything positive.

Still, he has hopes for having a color that invoked such fondness. And he'll only truly know once he's seen their color...

A squire looks upon her arm, guiding her fingers to lightly brush over such elegant handwriting.

Momonga.

When it first appeared, Neia had no idea what it was or what it meant. Soul marks are a phenomenon that only appeared when the Six Gods did, and was considered myth most. For awhile she tried to hide it, not wanting to be questioned for her sudden "tattoo," until her father's observant eyes caught her incessantly tugging her sleeve down.

Once it's meaning was recognized, her parents saw this as a sign. Of what, they did not tell her, but they did encourage her to hide it from others.

Two hundred years in the past, a soul mark was seen as a bad omen for one, or those closest to them, as it meant their fate was tangled with the war of the Greed Kings.

But further back a couple hundred years, a mortal with a soul mark was celebrated as a sign of good fortune, as that meant their fates were tied with one of the Six Gods.

Two hundred years have passed since the last mortal revealed themselves with a soul mark. Time would only tell what fortune lied in her own.

Tracing her fingers along the letters, Neia couldn't help but frown at how it's yellow color bordered on gold.

(The color of blind devotion.)

In short: Ainz Ooal Gown finds out he has a platonic soulmate somewhere in New World. But he finds he's gained yet another fanatical servant in Neia Baraja; which is exactly what he needs right now, obviously.
