Robyn
I woke up feeling weak, drowsy and confused. The bright lights over my head hurt my eyes so much I had to blink a few times before I could open them all the way. The monitor I was hooked up to beeped steadily as I adjusted myself in my bed. I thought I was alone until I heard someone sigh. I couldn't sit up so I turned my head must enough so I could see a figure sitting next to me with their head in their hands. I realized immediately that it was Chris because of the tattoos that covered his arms."Chris." I tried to call out to him but my mouth was so dry my voice was raspy and quiet. He somehow managed to hear me and he sat up quickly.
"Oh thank god you're okay." He got out of his chair and hugged me tight before he started kissing me all over my face.
"Okay that's enough." I giggled a little as I gently pushed him away.
"I'm sorry. I just got a little excited." He said before he sat back down. I noticed that there were flowers all over the room with cards attached to them. There were also balloons, teddy bears, and candy on almost every surface of my room.
"Where did all that stuff come from?" I said, gesturing towards all the gifts around the room.
"It would be easier to tell you where they didn't come from. They're mostly from me but your friends and family sent you some things too." I noticed that there was a styrofoam cup on my nightstand with a sticker with my name printed in tiny letters on it.
"Is that full?" I asked. If I didn't get something to drink soon I'm sure my tongue would dry out. Chris nodded his head and held the cup so the straw would be in my mouth. The water was nice and cold which really helped to wake me up and feel more alert. When I stopped drinking my cup was almost empty and I started to feel a little more like my normal self. I wasn't feeling as confused as before and as memories began flooding my brain I remembered what I was doing in the hospital in the first place.
"Where's Ava?"
"Who?"
"Don't play with me right now Chris."
"I'm not playing. I don't know who you're talking about."
"Our daughter Christopher. You were there when I had her. You, Ma, Yusef, and Mel were there and then I got sick-"
"I don't know where you got all that from but that never happened."
"Are you serious right now?"
"Yes! What are you talking about?" I could tell that he was genuinely confused so I started to question if the things I was remembering even happened in real life or if it was all just my imagination.
"So we don't have a child together?" He shook his head. "And we're not engaged?" He sighed and shook his head 'no' again. I felt tears start to fill my eyes but I blinked them away. I was so happy a minute ago and now everything I thought I had wasn't even real.
"What happened then?" I asked, forcing myself to sit up and look at him.
"I was hoping you wouldn't ask me that." Chris said as he looked down at his feet. I couldn't read the expression on his face but I was sure he was ashamed about something. At this point I was scared to hear what he had to say because I didn't think I could take anymore bad news. No one said anything for a few minutes and the room was quiet except for our breathing and the beeping sound coming from the monitor next to my bed.
"Are you going to say anything?" I asked him when I started getting impatient. Although I didn't want to get hit with another blow of disappointment I didn't want to wait any longer to hear what he had to say either. He took a deep breath and stared out of the window before he started talking.
