The drive back home was silent, but not uncomfortably so. I found myself strangely at ease, despite the events of the night. The car's gentle hum and the soft sway of the streetlights passing by soon lulled me into a short, dreamlike sleep.
I awoke with a start, disoriented by the flashing blue and red lights slicing through the darkness. Police sirens wailed in the distance, their echoes growing louder with each passing moment. I blinked, trying to focus my bleary eyes, and then I saw it-police cars clustered in front of Hoshi's house.
My heart raced, and I clutched Yeonjun's arm. "What's happening?"
He looked just as perplexed. "I have no idea, but it doesn't look good."
In a matter of seconds, chaos erupted. Everyone who had attended Hoshi's party, which included us, began pouring out of the house like a sea of panicked fish fleeing a predator. It was a hasty exodus, the fear palpable in the air.
Yeonjun's grip on the steering wheel tightened. "Ara, you need to go back inside your house. Don't let your parents see you. I'll figure this out and let you know as soon as I can."
I nodded and quickly slipped out of the car, my heart pounding. I watched him speed away, leaving me on the quiet street, just out of view from the commotion surrounding Hoshi's house.
I stealthily made my way back into my own home, praying that my parents were still asleep. I heard faint footsteps running down the stairs, and the tension in my body intensified. Frantically, I changed out of my party clothes and into my pajamas, my hands shaking.
My parents were awake, their voices drifting up from downstairs as they discussed the commotion outside. I held my breath, listening to their conversation.
"What could have happened at that hour?" my mother wondered aloud.
My father's voice held a hint of concern. "I hope Ara is safe and sound."
Finally, I couldn't stay awake any longer, exhaustion and fear weighing me down. As I slipped into sleep, my thoughts were haunted by the events of the night.
Why were the police at Hoshi's house? What had transpired during those moments when Yeonjun and I were away from the party? The mystery of that night lingered in my dreams, tainting my slumber with unanswered questions.
