Chenle's POV:

Renjun had rejoined us upstairs after meeting Y/N. He looked defeated and somehow mad. So much so that none of us didn't dare to inquire about his encounter with Y/N.

Renjun looked extra sensitive—as he figuratively stomped passed us—and we wanted no parts to that. He ignored us, heading straight for the room Y/N was supposed to be in.

She has lost some parts of her memory. She has forgotten you guys. The doctor had said this morning as soon as we arrived minutes after Renjun. We'd figured that he'd probably gotten the news before us but that wasn't the case, according to the doctor.

When he actually did find out, he was in denial. Heck, even I didn't believe it at first as I wanted to check the facts for myself.

Although, now seeing Renjun's unhappy mood silently answers all of my questions. Y/N has infact lost her memory.

The members and I sat in silence outside her room, most of us still in shock of the situation, while some of us were thinking of ways to press the rewind button and fix this all.

I could only blame our rotten luck for having to encounter those darned brothers, especially with Y/N in our lives. She didn't deserve that.

I see a nurse approaching us with a patient on a wheelchair.

"Y/N!" I jump up from my seat excitedly.

It's only after the distance has been closed that I realize it's actually Y/N. It's only now that I realize that it's been a week since I last saw her conscious. Her IV drip is still attached to her hand, while her left one is occupied by a juice box.

The other members follow through and I can see through the corner of my eyes that their moods have started to lighten up.

Jaemin asks Y/N if she recognizes us. She surprises by saying that she does, but then we find out that it's because we're Nct Dream. Not because we're her friends.

Y/N stands to greet all of us politely with handshakes while my mind shifts to the first time we met her. Our first meeting then was through a police complaint she had made against us, whereas now it's because she's a fan of us.

Just then, Renjun exits the room and stays to watch the scene in front of him with a poker expression. He is standing next to me while Y/N has her back faced to him, still greeting the others. Which means that she hasn't noticed him yet.

Y/N greets Mark lastly, but something strange happens when she does. She pauses for a moment with his hand still in hers and then immediately jumps back as if she's been shocked with a live wire.

Everything happens so fast that I don't notice how Renjun moves so quickly from next to me, to behind her. Staggering back while losing her balance, she falls into Renjun's arms, instantly falling out of consciousness.

"Y/N!" Renjun lightly taps her cheeks multiple times. "Y/N, please wake up."

All of us gather around them, before the nurse pushes past us to have a look at her. She rests the back of her hand on Y/N's forehead and then hold's Y/N's wrist to her ear.

"Can you get her inside, I'll call the doctor." The nurse says hurriedly before leaving.

Wasting no time, Renjun easily lifts Y/N up and carries her inside to her designated bed, while Jaemin carries the IV drip. He carefully sets her down on her bed.

None of us have joined them yet, except for Jaemin, and we're actually about to, until he stops us with a gesture. It says to leave them alone, give them some space. That's how we understand each other.

The doctor approaches the room minutes later with a few other hospital staff behind him, including the nurse from earlier. He rushes past us without any acknowledgements, and into the room.

Renjun exits it seconds later, with a worried expression worn across his face. Feeling empathetic towards him, Haechan rests his hand on his friend's shoulder, for emotional support.

"It hurts her, Haechan." Renjun breaks down in front of us.

I had been expecting him to do so any time now. Despite the devastating week we had so far, he had been strong all along. He wasn't ready to fall at a time like this, which is not Renjun-like at all. I am now glad to see him back to his usual self.

"E-every time we try to remind her, it hurts her."

"Stay positive, Renjun-ah. Let's wait for what the doctor has to say." Haechan tells a devastated Renjun, afraid of consoling him because he might retaliate.

"No, I know that's exactly the case. I spoke to her and she doesn't remember a single thing that happened. I can tell that it's accurately true because there is not a single thought visible in her eyes. It's like she is blank while staring at us, wondering why we're present here."

He finally narrates what we've been dying to know for a while now. Being the only person who had met Y/N privately, only he could describe her condition in detail.

"It's okay. There should be a way to rectify this." Haechan positively echos each and every members' thoughts, albeit Renjun.

We all have hope, despite knowing how severe her situation is.

"If it's going to hurt her, I won't allow it." Renjun shakes his head firmly.

Haechan is about to open his mouth to speak again but is stopped by Mark who puts a hand on his shoulder. The silent messaging he is sending says that we should probably let Renjun be, because he is beyond stressed and worried right now.

Meaning he won't even first-guess about gambling Y/N's safety. Not that we were up for it—of course not. It's just that the rest of us are thinking less rationally and more emotionally at the moment.

The doctor exits the room and we all rush eagerly by him to recieve the news about Y/N's condition.

"It's exactly how I had imagined it to be." He takes off his glasses. "Y/N has been so traumatized by her latest experience that her mind refuses to bring back those memories. So much so, that if even a little bit of her tragic past appears in front of her, to remind her, it will cause immense pain to the hippocampus of her brain, which could unfortunately result in permanent brain damage."

The silence that passes right after the doctors words is the loudest I've heard so far. A silence so deafening, it could give anyone tinnitus.

"Are you saying that there is no way for her to get her memory back?" I unknowingly break the silence with my curiosity.

"There is a chance." He says and I let out a breathe I didn't know I was holding. Infact, most of us do. "She should be able to get it on her own though, with no added pressure. You might find her saying things she used to say, or doing things she used to do, mostly without realizing it."

I can tell that most of the group has relaxed by now, seeing how the doctor gave us ample hope to breathe freely and hopefully fill our thoughts positively.

Except for one person. He is still stuck in the same place and emotion the doctor found him in.

Just, what is going on in his head?

"Listen boys, I'm putting emphasis on the 'no pressure' part. I hope that won't be a problem when she's discharged." He warns us for the last time.

I understand why he is constantly reminding us about this because even I can already imagine myself pressuring Y/N into bits and bits okf information, for her to remember quickly. It could be by mistake or on purpose, I'm not sure. That's exactly why he needs to emphasize it to us.

"That won't be a problem." Renjun speaks to him for the first time, surprising us all. "We're the exact reason she's in this condition so I assure you we won't gamble her well-being."

"I would like to know how." The wears his spectacles back on, as if he's about to leave.

"We'll stay away from her, and let her lead her previous life."
