It has been a month already, a month since you hopped in a van full of strangers and got driven out to the middle of nowhere to work in the coal mines. It wasn't some slave thing, or child labor, just a bunch of people down on their luck all decideding to pack up and leave what they knew for some good money to hopefully turn the tides of life in their direction. Some needed to pay off gambling debts, on the other side hospital bills. Some had pregnant wives or sick mothers. Some just had a dream and needed the leg up money would provide.
And maybe that common goal made strangers into family, squished together inside that farmhouse. Where bunks crowed every available room yet some still had to sleep on couches and cots on the floor. Where the bathroom was never empty and the fridge was never fully stalked. Yet a fight never broke out, only drunken laughter and exhausted sighs.
A month in, you awoke with a powerful gasp for air. Like something sitting on your chest finally stood up and your airway was clear once more. Slowly you sat up off the bed you were lucky enough to get claim of when you first arrived. Looking around you realize all your fellow bunkies were still passed out from the previous work day and/or relaxing afterward with booze. So you slipped from under the thin provided blanket and left for the bathroom. But you never made it.
When you got out into the hallway not only did the cold breeze from the open window hit you, but the sound of a woman's screams spooked you something bad. Slowly you creeped over to the window to look through the ripped-up screen. The scene before you wasn't what you expected, you thought perhaps a cougar or maybe one of your fellow workers but instead the yard was empty. The only present outside was a woman in the treelines you'd never seen before. She was wearing a dirty old green dress, covered with an equally old cloak. Her long blonde hair was covering a majority of her face yet you could still see her puffy red eyes, swollen from crying as she was doing right now. Shreaking out into the night's cold air. The scream of a mother who just lost her only son to the war. It made your skin light up with goosebumps.
You stood watching her like you were caught in a trance until finally her emerald green eyes met your own and it made you jump, ducking down to sit under the window. It was now dead silent, not even the usual sound of crickets could be heard. You crawled back to your room and dove under your covers, hiding under them like a child afraid of their dark closet.
The next morning you jumped when the person whose bunk was atop yours shook you. It made him pull back and give you a weird look "What has got you so jumpy?" You shook your head as you stood but it was very clear something was wrong, you looked like shit. The whole time you waited in line for the bathroom, got dressed, and ate breakfast that woman and her screams kept circling around your head. And finally, when everyone was grabbing their lunch boxes and getting ready to hop in the van to go to the site you couldn't do it anymore. You told them some bs story about thinking you had food poisoning and stayed back in the house while the others went ahead to work.
It was only three or four hours after the van left, you were at the table with a book, when you heard the loud sound. It made your frayed nerves ten times worse. You rushed outside and noticed the dust coming from over towards the mine and your heart sank. You knew, you just knew the mine had collapsed. You stumbled back inside and to the old wall phone next to the refrigerator. It was all a blur honestly. Calling your boss and explaining what you heard and saw, having to tell him you were the only one here with no way to go to the mines to ever cheek and see what happened.
He promised the emergency crew would be out in three days, that's how long it took to get out there from the city and to keep him posted with updates before he hung up. You hoped and even got on your knees to pray that the van would pull up a bit before dinner and the men would get out with a story about what happened today. Yet when midnight came and went without any sign of them you had the heart-crushing stomach stomach-turning realization that what you told the boss was truth. And an even more gut-wrenching nauseating realization that the pouring screams from outside were back.
♡3-Days Later♡
The emergency team two got tired of knocking and broke the door down with the knowledge the boss would definitely be upset with them. But when the whole house came up empty they began to worry, there was supposed to be someone here to pick up, the woman who made the call! She had no way to leave this area the only car was at the collapsed in mine. Yet she was gone without a trace, all her things still in her bag under the bunk that looked sleeper in.
