I watch her disappear between the people, a proud smirk on her face as she mouths a "Rookie mistake, Mister". Should have seen it coming, my uncle would kill me if he knew I fell for this trick. It's practically the first rule of body-guarding, never lose sight of your client, no matter what they say.

Looking for her name in my contacts I snap a quick text.

Me: Can't believe I fell for it, well played.

Bratty Marino: Not as good at your job as you claimed to be, I'm disappointed.

Oh, is she?

Me: I didn't know I was going to have to deal with this lack of "maturity." Would keep my guard up from now on.

I get back at her with the same thing she said to me about my little car stunt. If I were a decent guy I wouldn't have done it, not after knowing everything she was already going through but I promised I wouldn't make this easy on her so I did it anyway. This was supposed to be a game, right? And games are supposed to be fun.

Me: Be nice and text me when you get home.

Bratty Marino: uh huh, enjoy the car ride with my mother.

Yeah explaining this to Valentina is going to be really fun, my first day and I have already fucked it up. Hell, I said I was professional, what a good way of showing it.

"You lost her didn't you?" Valentina asks the moment I reach the car.

"I did, I'm sorry." Being honest about it feels better than lying. And I also don't think she would believe me if I said otherwise.

"Don't be, you are not the only one she has done this to, Eaton lost her a few times, too. It's practically part of the process." She tells me getting inside the car.

"She gets angry often?" I ask carefully, trying to figure out Gianna's dynamic while also understanding the relationship with her mother a little better.

There's obviously tension between them, which is understandable, from what I have seen Valentina is really controlling, and even though a part of me wants to believe she does care about her daughter in a way a mother should most of the time she just appears to be more like a manager, and not exactly a good one.

"Not really but when she does, she does a big drama." Valentina talks as if everything that has happened today was only her daughter's fault. Is she really that self-obsessed? That oblivious?

"I told her to text me when she got home, if she doesn't I will go there to make sure she is okay." I changed topics, not liking where the previous conversation could have led us to.

"She is not going to text you, trust me, so before going home I would advise you to go check. And talking about home, you live in Brooklyn don't you?" Meeting her gaze over the rearview mirror I nod, both confused and curious about her question. "How far is Gianna's apartment from yours?"
