"What time did school end today?" My eyes shift to the phone at her question.
"2—2:15," I say, my voice shaky. Her head moves into the frame of the video call at my stutter.
"What time is it down there?" Squinting my eyes, my heart hammers as I voice the time.
"8:18 pm."
"Suh, if school finished at 2:15, why did you just reach home at 8:18 pm? A waah—6 hours it took you to come from Downtown to Portmore?" She cocks an eyebrow as I pull at the tie around my neck.
Letting go of a breath, I think quickly on my feet.
"Remember mass runs straight up till 4 mommy plus Shyla and I went to KFC downtown, and then it was hard to get a taxi. You can ask aunty."
"Mi fi believe yuh?" She asks, and I knit my eyebrows, swallowing the lump in my throat.
"Yes, I am not lying...you can ask—"
She cuts me off with a hum.Pulling down my skirt, I step away from the camera, breathing hard.
"You're okay?" Her question throws me for a loop, and I quickly put on my yard clothes.
"Mi might stay longer than I usually do. If anything, you can always go over to mommy; it just aguh harder for you to reach school." Lifting the phone into my palms.
I lay my head on the pillow, staring back at the ageing face identical to mine.
"Yeah," she nods before lifting a bag to show me.
"This is the bag you've been nagging me for." My eyes open wide at the coffee-coloured Marc Jacobs I have been dying to get my hands on.
Squealing, I sit up quickly in the bed and whip my legs over the edge of the bed.
My feet move quickly in the direction of Shy's room. Without knocking, I barge in, jumping onto the bed.
"Look here, girlie." I shove the phone in her face, waiting excitedly for her reaction.
"Yesss."
