"And the slipper fit perfectly!", said Kaito, reading from a book that his wife, Maki, was holding. "It was then that the prince knew that Cinderella was the princess from the ball. The ugly stepmother and stepsisters couldn't believe their eyes!" Maki smiled at how her husband read the classic fairytale. His voice was at a volume that even the child manifesting in her womb could hear it.
That's right. Maki was pregnant.
"The prince took Cinderella back to the castle, where they married and lived happily ever after." Kaito closed the book and put it aside. "I think I remember something about that story ending differently", said Maki. "That was the none kid friendly version", said Kaito.
Maki giggled. "True", she said, rubbing her belly. "I wouldn't want to traumatize our child so early." "We don't want to traumatize them at all!", said Kaito, making his wife laugh. Her eyes then landed on two figures hiding behind the doorway, with what seemed to be frowns on their faces. She looked at her husband and gestured her head to them, and he caught on.
"I got them." The man stood up and walked over to the doorway, where the two figures quickly hid. "There's really no point in hiding, you two", said Kaito, leaning against the doorway and looking at his two daughters, Kaishi and Suki. He crouched down to their level. "What's wrong?" Suki crossed her arms and pouted. "The baby isn't even here yet." Kaito tilted his head.
"The baby isn't even here yet! Why are you giving it so much attention already!" Kaito gave a dry chuckle. He wasn't offended by his daughter's remark. She's been acting this way ever since Maki revealed her pregnancy. There wasn't much concern, as it was just your run of the mill sibling rivalry. Kaishi on the other hand wasn't as concerned. She had to go through it when Suki was born, so she didn't mind having another sibling.
"We're just making them excited to come out", said Kaito. Kaishi rolled her eyes. Her dad used the same excuse on her before. "By what? Reading it stories?" "Okay, first, it's a baby, not an it", said Kaito. "Secondly, I don't just read it stories."
"Yeah. You talk to them, they eat the food Mom eats, and so on", said Kaishi. "He eats all the food?! And Mom doesn't get any?! That stupid baby!", exclaimed Suki. "Now don't say that", said Kaito. "And we said before, we don't know if the baby is going to be a boy or a girl. But aren't you excited to find out?" "No! Because I don't want the baby to come!", exclaimed Suki before turning around and stomping off.
"Glad I wasn't like that", said Kaishi. Kaito chuckled. "Kind of hard to imagine that." "Just wait", said Maki, who joined the conversation. "You were a little jealous yourself, Kaishi, until Suki was born. It was like every problem you had with having a baby sister just disappeared, and you genuinely started to love her." The woman rubbed her belly. "I'm sure once the baby is here, Suki will have a change of heart. Guaranteed."
"You think so?", asked Kaishi. "Mother knows best", said Kaito. "Now come on. You best get to bed." Kaishi shrugged and went to her room, while her parents did the same. "Mother knows best? Really?", asked Maki. "Isn't it true, though?", asked Kaito. "You're always right. Actually, you're sometimes right."
"Sometimes?", asked Maki. "You were wrong about saying you'd never date me, and now, you're married to me. Oh, and you were wrong about never having kids. But now you do, and you're a natural at being a mother."
"Okay, I get it", chuckled Maki. Kaito smiled at her and continued on ahead, but his wife wasn't following. "Maki?", he asked, turning around and seeing Maki standing still in shock. "A-are you okay? What's wrong?" "Kaito...." "Yeah?" Maki stayed silent for a bit, until she finally spoke. "My... my water broke."
