It was another day at the arena. I sat there oiled down, smelling like lavender and daffodils, the scent overpowering my nose. I thrumed my nails on the stone chair beside the queen, waiting for ailign to start his match.
"Megan, get me a drink" the queen commanded.
I got up robotically, already used to this game, fetching things for the queen while my mate fought. Any little thing to keep me from watching the man I loved fight for his life in the arena. I moved my gloved hand, hoisting myself in my draped dress up, the fabric heavy, adding to my weight.
"Yes my queen" I said
I walked slowly, a hand snaking out to grab my wrist, it was one of the nobleman.
"Vile human" He sneered and tossed me to the side, down I feel on my ass. This was the first time someone had touched me while I fetched the queens drink, only before had they treated me with trepidation. Tears welled in my eyes, my ankle stung, as I pushed myself back up.
The cheering was so loud for ailign, it covered up my whimpering as I limped to the bowl of wine. Pouring a drink for her majesty. Tears fell then, spilling into the drink. I quickly wiped them away with my glove, and made my way back over to the queen.
Ailign had won again in the time it took to get the wine. Standing over a bloodied corpse again I wondered if he had gone soft on Jake all those sessions. Helping the male along in his training.
"My queen" I said handing over the glass.
"You missed a fine show again. He took out his opponent in three strikes." She said playing friendly.
"He is strong" I commented
"The strongest of our warriors" nole said
Ailign excepted the cheers and applauds with an arm raised high in the sky. The crowd going wild, they cheered louder. My mate. I wished I gotten to see him fight. Ailign shook his back, and wings burst forth from the slots in the back of his armor. In one mighty thrust of his wings he shot into the skies.
"Align! My prince! Ailign!" The crowds chanted
He hovered in the air for a moment before touching down gracefully on the royal booth, beside me.
He grabbed my hand and gave it a gentle kiss, and I blushed. This was my protector, my fighter, and my mate.
His wings disappeared, morphing back into his mighty frame, disappearing like mist on the wind. He walked me around by the hand to the freshment isle, stopping at the noble who'd touched me.
"Why" He snarled "do you smell of my mate?"
"My prince" the young noble man pleaded putting his hands up "I was merly helping her...."
Ailign sniffed the air, his eyes darting to the man's hand. My eyes widened at the notion, could he really smell that well?
"Then why is she limping?" He said "Is that your help!?"
All the other nobles were deathly quite there gazes pointed at the front of the arena, avoiding there princes glare. Ailign turned to one of them.
"Tell me" He demanded
"My prince. He was speaking to her and then she fell. I do not know the specifics" she said
Lying bitch. She was watching. My eyes stung again, tears threatening to fall.
"It is punishable by death or life imprisonment to harm a royal." Ailign said turning back to the male who had assaulted me.
"My prince she's a human" He pleaded
Ailign snarled in that alien clicking whine like I had never heard before, the sound rippling through the cheers for the next opponents.
"Who carries my child" He growled
All of the nobles eyes turned to us then, most quickly turning back away, as if remembering themselves and the situation.
"My prince I did not know" He pleaded again.
The royal family remained in there seating, letting ailign handle this himself, I peered back at them, waiting for them to interject. They did not.
Ailign pulled out a golden orb, the metal sliding and liquifying into a blade. He held it infront of the male, right to his throat.
"I choose death" He said and brought down the blade in one motion.
Ailign moved faster then I did, not covering my eyes in time I saw the males jugular sliced clean open, blood spilling down in great pools all over his white formal garb. My hands went to my mouth then instead of there intended destination.
"Let that be a lesson to any who touches my mate. Nobel, or otherwise. Do not touch what is mine." He snarled
My body was shaking now, eyes still glued to the man bleeding out before me. It felt different from the arena, so close I could touch it, and no battle at all it was a slaughter. I closed my eyes and took a steadying breath. Ailign picked me up then, princess style and carried me over to the refreshments, holding me in one arm he held out a plate to a servant who quickly filled it with an assortment of foods. Satisfied ailign brought me back around and sat me on my chair, handing me the plate.
"I'm sorry" He whispered bending down to do so. He took his chair then and continued to watch the fight with me.
My hands grasped the arms of my chair as I leaned forward to peer at the next contendants.
"And another participant from our home world jake!" The announcer called.
The stand cheered again as Jake made his entrance through the metal doorway.
I watched on as my second mate waved and at up the attention of the crowds. His opponent was a ciclopse giant, about three times Jake's height and humanoid in nature the pair faced off.
I ate from my plate, the desserts filling me up, I watched on. Jake lost that round, his chain wrapping around the beast, he quickly broke free and splashed Jake right in the chest, Jake flying off and landing in the wall, making a crator sized dent. He didn't get up. I let out a strangled gasp, unsure if Jake was OK, but the male soon hobbled away from the wall, barely able to stand on his feet.
"And the winner is!" My translator cut off again, going staticy as his name was announced in the aliens foreign tongue.
Ailign tutted at Jake, disapproval in his eyes but I was proud of the male, he had made it thus far. Proving he could still be a warrior even if it wasn't his profession.
"If only we could mist in this contest then the mechs would win hands down." Nole complained
"Where would the fun in that be?" The queen mused.
Indeed there'd be no fun. Having seen the process is was far less bloody and entertaining.
"The point is to show our strength without the technique" ailign said
"It was a battle well fought for your second mate" the queen said to me
"Indeed" I said still watching Jake hobble away and back through the gates.
"I think I'm ready to go home" I said placing a hand on my belly. "I get so fatigued these days"
Ailign looked at me concerned, turning back to his mother he asked for us to be excused, she waved him off, a silent dismissal.
We got up from our seats then, ailign lending me his arm as we walked around the nobles, there heads bowed to ailign.
"Are you ok?" He asked me
"Just a little wozzy" I admitted really just ready to be away from that box, the sneering nobles and icy queen. I was ready to be home, with my family and make sure Jake was OK.
"Alright" He answered
Back home Jake was indeed alright, his resident body already healed from the internal damage, he proudly declared his bill of health, the male stripping down and showing me his clean cut chest, no bruise in sight.
"There's never a need to worry about a mech. Even on our death beds we can usually pull through." Jake said
Ailign nodded his agreement. I snuggled up to jake then, needing to feel his safety, I fell asleep on his lap.
