×Sam POV×

Downstairs there was a noise so loud it could've easily been a bomb.
If something happened to my brother..

I wiped my hands on my flannel to get rid of the blood. It had been difficult to get the piece of wood out of Angie and by the time I was finished not only her was panting and sweating but me too.

We were slowly heading downstairs but Angie kept staring at me as if she waited for me to say something, as if she expected something to happen. She thought it wasn't obvious what she was doing but I knew her better than that.

"You okay?", I asked and she looked quickly away as if I caught her.

I almost didn't expect her to answer anymore but then she got closer. It was like she was confiding me a secret.
"War said some fucked up things.", she almost whispered.

Angie was terrified.
Every other person would've concluded that she was now scared of War but if he talked to her the same way he talked to me it was deeper than that: He made her afraid of herself.

"He's trying to mess with you, Angie. He's using your weak points.", I tried calming her down.

I know deep down you're still craving the blood.
I cleared my throat and she realized that my conversation with War didn't exactly made me feel at ease either.

I've told her that he thought we were basically evil frauds but I've conveniently left the personal detail out. What kind of normal person craved demon blood?

Why after all that time while I shared my magic with Angie without spending a single thought about that one night, that forbidden moment when I drank Ruby's blood, was I starting to want it again?

"On our way here in the car, you said I could talk to you, right?"

"Right.", I confirmed, not exactly sure where this was heading.

"You know, you look kind of like a... You have the energy of a... Tree!"

"Tree?", I supplied at the same time.
She blinked in surprise.

"Someone has beaten me to that comparison?", Angie wondered.

"Not someone, you once told me that."
Was this just a crazy coincidence?
Were we repeating patterns because I really did have the energy of a Tree or was this a sign that maybe Angie might have a chance at remembering after all?

"You can talk to me too, Sam. Just so you know."
Her offer moved me because damn, I didn't think we would get to this point this fast again. Last time we became friends under different circumstances: She was drugged and didn't have anyone in her life anymore.

Now, she was more or less stable in life and already made or renewed other friendships but she still made an effort to make this work again.

I'd probably take her up on her offer, even if it was just to discuss Wars brainwash attempt but this wasn't the right moment. The distinctive gunshots seemed to become louder which meant the other troup was getting closer to the house.

"Thank you. But maybe we should kill War for now.", I reminded her.

Angie suddenly froze and I instinctively didn't move either.
She signaled me to move so that she could look over the stairs.
Oh, someone was coming, I realized.
