In the hour it took for Ryan and me to get to his brother's car garage, I had managed to vomit on myself three more times. While I was a sick wreck, unable to think and barely able to function, Ryan was cool, calm and collected, putting on a stellar performance.
He had called his brother and informed him that we were on our way to the garage, that we had been drinking and had crashed my car so it would need to be fixed immediately, before my parents would miss it or know that something was going on.
Ryan's brother never asked any questions and quickly promised to take care of my car. Though I should have been thankful for the favor, it only made me feel worse.
Ryan assured me that everything would be okay. He said there was no way that anyone could trace anything back to us and reminded me over and over that this was the best way, the ONLY way for us to handle this.
"Maybe we should just call the cops, Ryan. What if he isn't dead? What if he can be saved? What if you missed something or we dropped something at the scene and they come looking for us?!' I was in a state of sheer panic. There was no reasoning that I could fathom for doing what we were doing.
But Ryan, calmly placed a finger on my lips, hushing me. He pulled me in close and protectively embraced me as I sobbed and collapsed into his muscular chest.
"Amber, you have to get it together," he began, pulling back to look into my face. "I need you in control! Our entire existence revolves around us staying sane, us being normal. If you call the police....if you tell anyone about what happened tonight, our lives are over. Say goodbye to your scholarships, say goodbye to your friends, and your sports, and your fancy, beautiful house - everything will get taken away, Amber. We'll go to jail. We'll be ruined!"
Our eyes met in a moment of intense pain only the two of us shared. There was only one thing for me to do...
