I'm not sure how long I was unconscious, but I was awakened with a start. Looking hazily at my surroundings, I noticed the metal of the cot, the bare white walls, and the filthy floor, but mostly, I noticed the bars and the fact that I was inside them. Clearly I wasn't dead which really sucked, but the realization that Ryan had brought me here sucked even more. My life was over.
"She's coming to." I heard someone say quietly.
It was then that I noticed, Ryan kneeling next to me and an officer sitting on the cot to my left. I felt the panic coming on again and I closed my eyes hoping to go back into the darkness where it was safe, but to no avail.
"Honey calm down," the officer said. "You're okay. Gave us all quite the scare, but nothing serious. Your boyfriend said you had a panic attack. Has that ever happened to you before?"
I shook my head no, unable to speak.
"What are you so stressed about? No teenage girl should be stressed like that..."
I shrugged my shoulders, and looked down at my hands.
Ryan spoke suddenly, explaining to the officer that I had a pregnancy scare and was worried how it would ruin my future.
The officer looked sympathetic and even a little embarrased, "Well, that's not really my business, but I hope it was just a scare for your sake and that the two of you take proper precautions."
"Oh we do," Ryan continued, almost hurriedly. "Neither of us has time for babies right now, do we babe?"
I smiled a sarcastic smile and turned away.
"We should probably get going," Ryan continued, standing up and taking my hand. "Is it okay that we leave?"
"Sure," the officer replied. "I might suggest you give your doctor a call or go to the emergency room if your symptoms get that bad again though. That's pretty scary stuff..."
"Thank you, Officer Smith. I'll make sure she makes it home safe and keep a close eye on her. Now that the pregnancy scare is over, I'm sure she'll be fine. Come on babe."
The officer helped me to my feet and escourted Ryan and me to the exit. The silence among us was awkward, but I could not muster the strength to speak. I was stunned, shocked, mortified, bewildered, unsure of what exactly had taken place.
Ryan and I quietly got into the car. I wanted to ask questions, to know what just happened, but I didn't hsve the words and I didn't want to look at him. I was ashamed and embarrassed. I took a quick glance at his face as he put the car in gear and was taken aback by his smug expression.
