SOORI

It's lunch break. We just had physics, maths and science. I'm walking with three of my friends: Lily, Sam and Noah. Before I walk downstairs, I put my backpack in my locker. I don't like carrying that heavy weight around when I'm having a break.

We're walking down the stairs together. At lunch break, we usually walk around the school and talk about random things.

"I'm so hungry! I haven't eaten breakfast." Lily says as we walk into the cafeteria. "Why didn't you?" I ask, a little worried. "I woke up pretty late. Didn't have time." Lily says as she leads us to the vending machine. She gets a bar of chocolate, which surprises me. I would get nauseous from a whole bar of chocolate at 10:15 in the morning. I hear a notification coming from my phone. I take my phone out of my back pocket. It's the family groupchat.

I damn near break down. Something happened to my mom. And it has to be something serious. My dad would never text like this if my mom just fell or something.

___

"I have to go." I say, still looking at my phone. "What? Why?" Sam asks. "Something happened to my mom, I'll text you guys." I say. I don't listen to what else my friends have to say, because I have to go.

I call San. he immediately picks up.

"Where are you?" I ask as I speed walk through the halls.

"Jae and I are at the lockers. Where are you?"

"I'm coming to you guys right now."

"K, I'll see you."

I hang up the phone and sprint up the stairs. I see Jae and San in the corner of my eye, putting on their jackets. "Hey." I say a little out of breath. "Hey, get your stuff. We gotta go." San says. I open my locker and take out my backpack and my jacket. The moment I put on my jacket, San and Jae start walking down the stairs.

I quickly lock my locker and swing my bag over my shoulder. I follow San and Jae down the stairs. We get outside and speed walk to San's car. I get in the back of the car. I haven't even fully closed my door yet and San already starts driving.

We're all stressed. San is driving as fast as he can, Jae is constantly checking his phone if he gets any updates from our dad, and I'm in the backseat trying to make sure we won't get in trouble for 'skipping' school.

I'm calling the school, trying to explain why we can't be there for the rest of the school day. I'm happy the teacher I'm speaking to is okay with this.

We're in our neighborhood. Almost there. When we get to our street, I spot an ambulance, parked in front of our driveway. This isn't good.

I put my backpack on and wait for San to slow down. When he stops, I open the car door and run to the front door of our house. I take my keys out of my pocket. I try to unlock the door, my hands shaking. I twist the key and the door opens. I push the door and quickly go inside. I drop my backpack on the floor and call for my parents.

"Mom?" I loudly say. I hear Jae and San behind me. I run up the stairs. And there she is. Unconscious on the top of the stairs. Her face pale as ever. She's on her back, and the paramedics are doing God knows what to her. She doesn't look good at all. My dad's beside her, on his knees, tears in his eyes and squeezing my mom's hand.

"What happened?" Jae asks as he rushed over to mom. "Keep distance, sir." Says one of the paramedics. "Dad, what happened?" Jae repeats. "Your mother had a seizure, and then she fainted." His voice broke as he said that.

"But mom doesn't have any health problems. Just out of no where?" I ask as I unzip my jacket. "Your mother probably does have health problems, but it was never noticed until now." One of the paramedics says. "So what does she have?" San asks. "We don't know. We have to take her to the hospital in our ambulance."

Mom's gonna be in the hospital? It's not possible. Mom was doing fine this morning. The last time I saw her was less than four hours ago. That's not a long time.

They're lifting my mom up, carrying her down the stairs. We all follow them downstairs. They bring her outside and lay her down on the stretcher that was placed in the ambulance. "I assume the husband is coming with us in the ambulance?"

"Yes, I'm coming with you guys." My dad says. "What about us?" I ask. "You guys can follow in your own car or other transportation. There's only one person allowed in the ambulance." One of the paramedics tells me.

"Okay then, let's go." Jae says. Dad quickly runs back inside for his keys and locks the front door behind him. San, Jae and I get back in San's car. Dad hops in the back of the ambulance with mom. Their doors close, and I'm not able to see them anymore.

The ambulance starts driving, and so does San. We follow the ambulance, but it doesn't take long until we lose it, because the sirens and the blue lights are on, meaning they get to pass through all the traffic. We drive to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. This is the hospital we were all born in. It's one of the best hospitals in California.

We're almost there. We're literally in the parking lot. One of the paramedics is waiting for us. We get out of the car and speed walk over to the paramedic member that was waiting for us. I don't even know how bad the case is. No matter what, she'll survive this.

I know it.
