In Jewish folklore, Azazel is a demon or evil spirit to whom a scapegoat was delivered to carry the Jewish people's sins during the ancient festival of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). For the ceremony, two male goats were chosen by lot, one "for the Lord" and the other "for Azazel" (Leviticus 16:8). The Mishna describes the rite, which was performed by the high priest in the Second Temple.
The goat meant "for Azazel" was driven into the wilderness and tossed over a precipice to its death after the high priest symbolically transferred all of the Jewish people's sins to the scapegoat. Azazel was the personification of filth and was sometimes referred to as a fallen angel in later rabbinic writings.
The name Azazel was originally recorded in the Hebrew Bible (Leviticus 16:8), and it can mean both "God strengthens" and "impudent to God." Azazel was depicted in the Book of Enoch as one of the Grigori's commanders, fallen angels who married and had offspring with human women.
Raphael also represented him as being chained to a clear, barren landscape. This was referenced in 4.22 Lucifer Rising when Azazel mentioned that he had been "wandering the desert for years, looking for my [his] father."
He is considered to be the infernal armies' chief standard-bearer, and he has a high position in Hell's Hierarchy. In John Milton's Paradise Lost, he is mentioned as a fallen angel.
In Modern Hebrew, 'lekh l'Azazel" (לך לעזאזל) is the equivalent of the English curse "go to Hell".'
Azazel is a rebellious angel leader in the Apocrypha, as portrayed in the Book of Enoch. In all things of warfare and witchcraft, he leads the pre-Flood civilizations of men, giants (perhaps Nephilim).
Azazel, once beautiful but now a fallen snake or carrion bird, attempted to corrupt humanity, according to Hebraic literature. In most Jewish literature, he is described as having a demon-like crimson appearance, yellow eyes, and wearing goat skulls.
Azazel also appears to have led the charge in having sexual relations with mortal women and bearing half-divine, half-human children known as the Nephilim, according to Jewish folklore.
Azazel is interesting in that he has so corrupted humanity that Jewish literature encourages readers and listeners to blame him for all transgression.
To put it another way, scapegoat him. As you did with the goat before driving it out into the wilderness, lay your sins on him. This could explain why the Hebrew word "Azazel" appears in the Leviticus 16 verse instead of "scapegoat."
Azazel is known by the nicknames "The Yellow-Eyed Demon" and "Yellow Eyes." The Yellow Demon is based on a local legend about a hideous creature who had broken filial piety's rules. Violations signified the end of civilization; the demon was a society without laws, a beast that needed to be slain.
Azazel has yellow irises and white sclerae, but no visible pupils most of the time (however he is plainly represented as having black pupils when possessed). The irises are revealed to have hazy yellow and grey tones, with the appearance of the irises changing according on the lighting. Cattle deaths, electrical storms, and temperature variations occur in the week leading up to an Azazel attack.
Azazel was likewise the ruthless ruler of the demon world until his demise. [Nothing is known about Azazel's human life, but he was later chosen by Lucifer to be a Prince of Hell alongside Ramiel, Asmodeus, and Dagon, and was personally turned by Lucifer into one of the first four demons produced after Lilith. Azazel, as a Prince of Hell, was a demonic general who was so devoted to Lucifer that when the other Princes abandoned Lucifer's plot and fled to Earth, Azazel stayed to rule Hell and liberate Lucifer to begin the Apocalypse.
Azazel revelled in inflicting misery on others, whether psychological or physical. He liked to toy with his victims' emotions by convincing them that their darkest fears were true before killing them, which he did with a sadistic sense of humour. His hallmark style of murder was particularly brutal: he telekinetically tied his victims to the ceiling, sliced their tummies open, and burned them alive in front of their spouses.
Azazel considered his fellow demons to be his family, and his followers to be his "children." Azazel was dreaded by most demons, who saw him as a harsh tyrant. Even the Seven Deadly Sins feared him because of his skills. Azazel was similarly devoted to his father, Lucifer, whom he continued to believe in and seek out long after the majority of demons had given up. He despised these "non-believers," referring to them as "heathens." Azazel was a fanatic, according to his brother Ramiel, and the only one of the Princes of Hell who cared about Lucifer's plans in the end.
Azazel was a demon and a Prince of Hell, yet he was known in Hell as The Yellow-Eyed Demon before his name and title were known (a specific racial description for a General of Hell). It has been demonstrated that its real form, which manifests as black smoke on Earth, resembles a skull. He normally wears a dark trench coat, a tie, and a formal hat and is a pale Caucasian middle-aged man.
Azazel was a powerful demon, one of only two on the "A-list" of demons (the other being Lilith). He was the only known demon with yellow eyes. Azazel was an heir to the throne of Hell, second only to Lucifer and Lilith in Hell's hierarchy, and he oversaw the scheme to release Lucifer. He was a very powerful demon, along with Lilith, Cain, Alastair, Crowley, and Abaddon, who was a Knight of Hell, as well as his siblings Ramiel, Dagon, and Asmodeus, one of the most powerful demons to appear on the show. Azazel was revealed to be a Prince of Hell, one of the earliest demons ever formed, and a demonic general, making him extremely powerful. He's the only demon who's been shown to be impervious to holy water so far.
Try not to Wander alone at night. Who knows where the yellow-eyed demon is up to!
