A soul eater is a legendary figure in several African peoples' traditional belief systems, particularly among the Hausa of Nigeria and Niger. Traditional folk beliefs in witchcraft, zombies, and other related phenomena are linked to the belief in soul eaters. The soul eater is said to be capable of consuming a person's spirit, resulting in a deadly wasting sickness.

The desire and capacity for the behaviour, known as Maita in Hausa, is founded in specific stones held in a person's stomach, according to Hausa mythology. The attribute is said to be inherited from one's parents or learned from an already practicing practitioner. In order to carry out his or her profession, the soul eater can take the form of a dog or other animal, which is similar to the beliefs in werewolves, werecats, selkies, and other were-creatures and human/animal beings found in global folklore.

Another myth about soul eaters is that they are men who have been cursed by witches and are forced to devour the souls of humans to survive. The soul eater consumes the soul of a victim, who then vanishes as dust.

In the United States and the Caribbean, the notion has persisted in African-American folklore. Other traditional African civilizations, such as the Fulbe and the Serer, share similar beliefs, as do societies outside of Africa, such as the tribes of Papua New Guinea's Mount Hagen region.

From the ancient Egyptians to the Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Natchez, certain traditional religions have figures whose names have been translated into English as "soul eater." The notion is also found in Greek mythology, as seen by the narrative of Bellerophon, who "devour[ed] his own soul," according to Homer's Iliad. These mythological figures, on the other hand, are spiritual rather than human, and hence contrast from Hausa and similar beliefs. A variety of modern horror fiction and fantasy writers, contemporary singers, and anime and video game producers have used the old belief in soul-eaters for their own purposes.

Soul eaters live on a realm that lies between the human and non-human worlds, outside of time and space. When a soul eater takes up residence in a home, it establishes a "nest." The nest then takes on the appearance of the house it's in, except it's a lot darker. A soul eater may generate enough strength to steal the souls of its victims and carry them to its nest, where they feed the soul eater until the soul withers away since it is trapped between realms. To keep the victim's soul vulnerable, a soul eater will play mind games with them, sending them visions of things or people they care about in misery.

A Dementor was a gliding, wraithlike Dark creature that was widely regarded as one of the most heinous of the dark creatures to have ever existed in the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Dementors preyed on human happiness, causing depression and sorrow in those who came into contact with them.

They could also absorb a person's soul, leaving them in a lifelong vegetative state; as a result, they were dubbed "soul-sucking fiends," and those who were left soulless were referred to as "empty-shells." Dementors were strongly linked with Azkaban since they were originally employed as prison guards by the British Ministry of Magic, and they were not known to reside in any other area permanently.

In the story of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The people of Ta Lo shut the Soul Eaters and their leader, the Dweller-in-Darkness, away behind the Dark Gates thousands of years ago. Many people have attempted and failed to open it over the years. A mysterious voice is believed to have drawn them there, offering them anything they want.

Centuries later, Xu Wenwu, aided by the alleged voice of his deceased wife Ying Li, was able to defeat the Ta Lo warriors with his army and eventually open the gates, freeing the Dweller-in-Darkness and Soul Eaters accidently. After recognising they wouldn't be able to defeat the hostile creatures on their own, the warriors of Ta Lo and the Ten Rings had to band together to combat them using Dragon Scale weapons. After Shang-Chi awakened the Great Protector, they managed to kill the remaining Soul Eaters and the Dweller-in-Darkness.

An Egyptian creature that fed on the soul/heart of the Underworld's darkness. Ammit ate the hearts and/or souls of the sinful dead who failed Osiris, the Lord of the Underworld, or Duat's test. The scales of Maat, the goddess of justice, were used to weigh a person's heart.

On the other scale, a feather was placed. If the heart was heavier than the feather, it meant the individual had committed too many sins in their lifetime. Ammit would consume the heart in this circumstance, preventing the soul from entering the afterlife and making it eternally unhappy.

In the Japanese folk-lore,a flaming wheel with a man's head in the centre sucks the souls of anyone who sees it. Wanyūdō takes the form of a burning oxcart wheel bearing the tormented face of a man. Various folklore purports him as the condemned soul of a tyrannical daimyō who, in life, was known for having his victims drawn on the back of an oxcart.

He is said to guard the gates of Hell, and to wander back and forth along the road between this world and the underworld, scaring townsfolk as he passes and stealing the souls of anyone who gets too close in order to bring them to Hell with him.

A Vodnici is a water ghoul who imprisons your soul for all eternity in a cup. This creature can be found in Slovakia. Vodnici is a nude elderly guy with a frog-like face, long hair, and a body coated in algae, muck, and mud, frequently with black fish scales. He possesses webbed paws in place of hands, a fishtail, and red-hot coal-like eyes.

Soul Eaters are medium-sized monsters with bat-like leathery wings that can fly and octopus-like tentacles that can snare and harvest their victims' souls. Soul Eaters are notorious for their cruelty and aggression. Their main goal is to rob other creatures of their souls, leaving them as empty corpses. Soul Eaters are also invincible to practically all attacks and materials. No one knows how to defeat a soul eater. Some says there is a special sigil painted by blood which cripples and weakens the soul eater but doesn't kill or exterminate it.
