The Leviathans, also known as Leviathans, The Old Ones, Chompers, or simply Levis, are a race of ancient, primordial monsters who functioned as God's first beasts. As a result, they come before angels, people, and even the soul itself. Because the creatures were too hungry and destructive, God created Purgatory and imprisoned them there.

The Leviathans intended to conquer the Earth and establish themselves as the planet's new dominant species, harvesting the human race as their primary and bountiful food source while eradicating any other competitors and dangers to their food supply. The united efforts of hunters, angels, demons, and even monsters prevented this attempt to conquer humans.

These Leviathans were among the first creatures created by God, predating angels and mankind. God utilized the nectar of Leviathan Blossom, a blossom that formed from the Leviathan's corpses, to seal the Darkness. This attests to the Leviathans' enormous antiquity, as their roots must predate the great struggle between God and his archangels against the Darkness, which took place when God was still building the universe in its most rudimentary form. The Leviathans were imprisoned in Purgatory, which was designed particularly to house Leviathans.

It's unclear whether this occurred before or after God's sealing of the Darkness. Furthermore, after imprisoning the Leviathans, God developed a method of murdering them if they ever managed to escape Purgatory. God constructed a tablet for the Leviathans in case they ever escaped as he was creating the Word of God tablets, with directions for the weapon as well as a warning against them.

Leviathans are very powerful beasts, more powerful than most other creatures and capable of killing and/or eating just about anything else. They are some of God's early creations. Despite their status as being far older than angels and their capacity to kill celestials with relative ease, Leviathans have yet to demonstrate any magical or psychic talents other than flying in Purgatory and the ability to dampen angels' powers.

Leviathans have the ability to exterminate all demons. Even angels are weak in the face of Leviathans. This distinguishes them from other species in that they can defeat creatures with significantly greater powers. It took the hunters, angels, demons, and even other creatures to form informal alliances and unite their efforts before the Leviathan threat could be defeated.

In comparison to humans, Leviathans have considerably greater senses. They also have an extremely good temperature sense. Leviathans have demonstrated the capacity to fly and land anywhere with incredible speed and force in their full form in Purgatory. They seem like meteors made of a thick, black slime in this state.

Leviathan, like demons, can take control of a human host's body and mind with a touch, but unlike demons, the process changes the host physically and appears to be permanent. They have the ability to not only possess an already occupied vessel, but also to expel the entity that is possessed by the host they are invading.

It have gigantic, retractable jaws that are extremely powerful and serve as their primary weapon and method of feeding. Their jaws are capable of ripping open practically anything, including people, angels, demons, and a variety of other creatures – even other Leviathan. When this ability is used, the user's face appears to be dramatically altered, such as the removal of their eyes and nose to make way for their jaws.

Despite residing in Purgatory since the beginning of time, Leviathans are extremely adaptable, as they were able to grasp a complete comprehension of modern technology and processes.

Leviathans can move at extraordinary speeds, as evidenced by their eating of a swimming team by two Leviathans. It can jump higher than humans, climb faster, and have quicker reflexes than humans.

Only two methods are known to permanently destroy Leviathans, making them exceedingly difficult to kill but not impossible. They believed they were invincible before they arrived on Earth and were unaware of anything that might harm them. They do, however, have a few flaws that make it tough for their opponents to injure or incapacitate them. It has been shown that they can be permanently killed in Purgatory, albeit the procedure is unknown.
