A team of Japanese researchers is currently studying a 300-year-old mermaid-shaped mummy, but they seem baffled by its features. The odd 12-inch monster was allegedly found in the Pacific Ocean off the Japanese island of Shikoku between 1736 and 1741. But at the moment, it is kept at a shrine in Asakuchi.

The mummy was reportedly found preserved in a box with a note indicating that it had been caught in a fishing net in the Pacific Ocean, according to a report in the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun. The "dried mermaid" was cared for by one family, then handed to another until being purchased by a temple, according to the legend. Sharp teeth, a grimace, two hands, and hair on the brow and skull are all hallmarks of the mummy. In other words, its top half resembles a person in an odd way. However, it possesses fish-like features on the lower half. Scaly on the bottom half of the body, with a tail-like tapering end.
