Kolkata is a fantastic city with many attractions such as the Ganges ghats, delectable cuisine, and a modern feel while remaining strongly anchored in tradition. However, there is another side of Kolkata that has a bleak history. "Putul Bari" or "The House of Dolls" is the highly frightening haunted house located on the banks of the Hugli River in Shobhabazar.

Putul Bari near Kolkata has been 'spookifying' locals for years with weird noises, rare encounters, and occasional views of something that is definitely not an earthly entity.

Putul Bari is located at 22 Hazra Chandra Mullick Lane, near the Shobhabazar jetty and adjacent to the Circular Railway track. But why and how did this opulent and aristocratic palace end up as a storeroom? This is a question that will pique anyone's interest. Putul Bari was originally dominated by the owners who used to live there, according to the locals. They used to make the most of their position. It's thought that they raped and murdered young ladies here in order to hide the crime. Putul Bari eventually met a spooky end.

Not only that, but some claim that the house's owner had a lovely daughter who was enthralled by dolls (Putul in Bengali). Her passion grew to the point that she had strewn dolls of all shapes and sizes throughout the house. Soon after, she was killed in an accident, causing the mansion to become haunted.

To keep curious trespassers away, the poor tenants who had lived there up a sign that reads, "This place has no ghosts." However, the reality appears to be rather different. People who live near Putul Bari believe that the girl's damaged and worn-out dolls come to life at night and prowl the neighbourhood.

They also said that the dancers' spirits, who were buried deep within the building's apartments, still dance on the lone terrace, and that the sound of jewels may be heard on certain evenings. Isn't it frightening enough?

If you ever visit the location, you will notice that the house terrace is decorated with unique doll-like artefacts that will undoubtedly scare the living daylights out of the mansion on a dark moonless night.

Putul Bari is one of several haunting spots in Kolkata, the city of pleasure. Maybe the untold stories are only for gossip, or maybe the truth is something altogether else. It's difficult to make any conclusions.

This massive Roman-style structure with antique-style dolls adorning the terrace is likely to give anyone chills and an exciting chill down their spine. It is reported and thought that in the hazy days of "Babu Culture," the Babus (rich owners) who inhabited the area used to sexually exploit young ladies here, and if necessary, killed some of them to hide their crime. It's also thought that the souls of the murdered women are still roaming the grounds, seeking justice.

It's worth noting that Putul Bari is the home of the Natta Family, the founders of the famous Natta Jatra Company. Sri Makhan Lal Natta, who bought the property in 1978, was in charge of the Natta Company until recently. He, on the other hand, recently passed away. The Natta Company's office was on the third floor. The vast majority of the rooms are currently rented by tenants who are neither interested nor capable of maintaining the mammoth structure.

Many people assumed that because they didn't know what this house was, it must hold a treasure trove of early nineteenth-century dolls that belonged to the owner's daughter. The house became haunted after the death of the daughter, and the dolls awoke at night and roamed the rooms.

Some believed that this was a site where the rich and famous came to watch Baiji's nighttime dancing performance. And one of the dancers was murdered in this building during one of these performances, and the building has been haunted by the soul of this damsel in distress ever since; on a full moon night, she still dances in the terrace. Someone even claimed that this mansion was the site of many British massacres during the Indian independence war. Instead of haunting the British generals, these deceased freedom fighters began haunting the locals.

Almost all of the rooms at the House of Dolls are currently occupied by renters. It is alleged that a few hiding independence fighters couldn't escape out of the house when British forces opened fire on them because spirits prevented them from doing so. However, numerous residents have said unequivocally that they have never witnessed any supernatural phenomena in this house and have instead been hounded by ghost enthusiasts as a result of the "haunted house" rumour spreading on social media. They believe the rumours were pre-planned, and that someone deliberately circulated humour to cause panic among the locals, causing them to flee.

The renters that live here have neither the desire nor the expertise to maintain the large structure. They appear to be taking no steps to maintain or renovate the vast structure, which is in a pitiful state. It will lose its brilliance forever if adequate action is not taken. Even the residents of the building are said to be afraid of climbing to the upper floors. Why is it so?
