AUTHOR: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE STORY SO FAR?
Now...
Rivervine's courtroom was small; it had about 20 seats for people to come watch and 4 or 5 seats for the witnesses and the jury, but for the death of Victoria Blane, everyone showed up. Adjustments were made weeks before the trial and every single soul in Rivervine was there.
"Mr. Blane," The Judge reads as he squints at the paper in front of him. "It reads here that you are with us today for the murder of your daughter, Victoria Blane." The judge looks up at Mr. Blane, no emotion in his face.
"Well you must be wrong sir," Mr. Blane spits, "only a fool would kill his own daughter." He scoffs. "And a fool you are Mr. Blane," Victoria's lawyer gets up and adjusts his suit and tie, "Ms. Blane knew exactly the type of person you are, so she hired a lawyer years before she died." Mrs. Lauren said, "With what kind of money?" Mr. Blane let out a small laugh and looked around to see if anyone shared his sense of humor, "When she told me about the kind of father you were Mr. Blane, I asked for no money." Victoria's father began quivering. It was clear to everyone in the courtroom that he was no longer so smug and comfortable.
"Ms. Blane was at the park before she died," Mrs. Lauren steps in front of the jury to present Victoria's case. Unlike Mr. Blane, who was a lawyer himself and decided to get the job done alone. "It was said that she was spotted with her boyfriend, Samuel, who was our first suspect at the time, and that would mean something if he too wasn't missing.
As for Damian Loveborn, her ex-boyfriend who is also missing, all suspicions were cleared because it was proved that he hadn't been seen a week prior to the murder, and Isabella David wasn't in the country.
"So that leaves you Mr. Blane, you are the only one on the list." She goes back to take a seat, but the Judge interrupts. "What list, and why haven't I gotten it?" Mrs. Lauren heads to the Judge's Bench and hands him a piece of paper, "This is a list that Ms. Blane wrote down prior to her death with the names of all the people she suspected may turn against her," She turns to face Mr. Blane, looking him dead in the eyes and into his soul.
She could see his lies and wounds that he let out on his poor daughter. All these scars that were engraved into her essence because of the man he is, " Mr. Blane, your honor, was on the top of that list." Mrs. Lauren walks back to say her final statement before letting Mr. Blane speak, "See, your honor," She lets out a deep breath, "I don't know what's worse; a daughter who is scared of death that she made a suspect list, or the fact that her own father is on the top of that list."
The courtroom went quiet for a moment. You could feel the tension Mrs. Lauren created, the power she held with every word said, every word that came out of her life felt alive and correct.
Even if everything she said was false, she said it in a way that caught the eyes of everyone in this room. "Your honor," Mr. Blane stands up, "I admit that I haven't been a good father. Maybe rude and mean at times, but I did not kill my daughter." He chokes out, "My daughter was killed at a park, or that's what the evidence says because the last thing they found was a knife with blood on it, and the DNA was hers. But where is the body?" He turns to the jury teary-eyed, "If I was to be blamed for my own daughter's death, I expect to see a body at least. Your honor, I did not kill my daughter, I am still waiting to see a body to give my little girl the funeral she deserves, and I want to find out who killed her more than everyone else in this room." Mr. Blane sits down and wipes his tears.
"Touching." Mrs. Lauren gets back up again, "But Mr. Blane, you know very well why we couldn't find a body. The amount of blood found on that park bench was enough to register Ms. Blane dead. And if that wasn't enough, you know very well that the tide was high that night, and the park is right next to the ocean. Any murderer with half a brain would think to throw her body in there and leave. And if all of that wasn't enough, drops of her blood were found on the rocks right next to the ocean, which indicate that when they threw her, she hit the rocks and the wave took her far away, but you didn't do much research did you?" Mrs. Lauren teases.
"No, I was too busy mourning!" He gets up and yells through his tears, "Silence!" The Judge slams his gavel, "I will not tolerate a farce in my courtroom, so sit down Mr. Blane!"
The courtroom was filled with the voices of the people's small chatter happening all around. Everyone had opinions, everyone had something to say, but no one cares about what they wanted to say if they don't have evidence. It's quite sad to see how hated Victoria Blane was, and how everyone showed up to her murder case when they could.
It raises the question of who actually cares and who is only coming here for the media. All I know is that Victoria Blane was hated by everyone in Rivervine, whether they liked to admit it or not, so really everyone in this courtroom might have something to do with killing her. "I didn't know that, no." Mr. Blane takes a deep breath to cool off, "I just want to know where my daughter is..." He adds, but Mrs. Lauren is showing no remorse or sympathy, "You are lucky that this is only the case of Victoria Blane's murder, Mr. Blane." She smiles, "Let's not even begin on what you did to her boyfriend."
"That's enough for today, I will see you next week for the second part of this trial. Court adjourned." he slams his gavel and nods at Mr. Blane, and Mrs. Lauren, and slams his gavel one more time before he leaves the courtroom.
Everyone was eyeing Mr. Blane as he left that courtroom. Cameras were flashing in his face and he felt like a celebrity, but not in a good way. Questions like, "Did you kill your daughter?" and "How could you kill your own daughter?" kept getting thrown at him, and some protestors who were seeking justice for Victoria also threw tomatoes and all sorts of things at him, but Mr. Blane only looked down at the floor as he walked far from the courtroom, and only God knows what was on his mind.
