Onika's POV
Tears flowed as I read Beyonce’s text, if I could turn back the time I would do things differently but sadly I can’t. She has every right to be mad and I don’t blame her, falling asleep proved difficult, I had a lot on my mind but most importantly Papa.
Monday morning came and I dropped Rumi at school and went to the hospital, it had become my routine these past years.
Papa was asleep with tubes and drips all over his small body, everyday my heart broke seeing him like this. Before I could run away with my thoughts, a call snapped me out of it.
Me- hi…
Beyonce- what hospital are you at?
Me- Medicare
Beyonce- okay
I was at the cafeteria about to get food when I saw Beyonce making her way towards me and held what seemed to be food. "figured you’d be hungry” she said and I was loss for words and nodded.
We made our way to Papa’s room and immediately she held onto his hand and broke down. I’ve never seen her like this, even when we were together.
“Is this the reason why you came to my workplace?” I nodded and she sat next to me while unpacking the food. “eat, you’ve lost weight” she noticed, who am I kidding anyone would tell
that I’ve lost weight.
“He needs a bone marrow transplant and I am not a match, he’s been on the waiting list for 3 years now. We’ve been in and out of the hospital since.” After a long silence she took my shaking hands and pulled me towards her, it was at that moment I let it all out. I cried till I fell asleep. When I woke she was still embracing me and on a call. I got up and saw how
dark it was outside and panicked. She noticed and hung up, “Rumi is at my place, don’t worry” I let out a sigh of relief.
After some formalities with the doctor, we left in Beyonce’s car. She could sense my hesitation once we arrived at her place. “come…I spoke to Blue, don’t worry” we made our way to kitchen, It was late and the girls were probably sleeping. We went to check on them and found both asleep with Blue embracing Rumi, I held back the tears.
Beyonce led me to her bedroom, “take this, I’ll run a hot bath for you” I nodded, taking her pajamas and followed her to the bathroom. Once finished I found her sitting on the edge of the bed already in her sleep wear. “I’ll be in the room next door if you need anything” she left before I could say anything. It felt different yet comforting to be in the room we once shared. For the first time in years, I fell asleep immediately.
I didn’t realize how long I slept until Beyonce came to check up on me “Nika…” she whispered so sweetly and caressed my check, I felt like I was dreaming. I opened my swollen eyes slowly adjusting to the light. “hi…” I sat up. “I took the girls to school, you should eat something. I’ll be in the kitchen”
By the time I made it to the kitchen breakfast was set on the table and Beyonce was busy on her pc and eating at the same time. I’m probably inconveniencing her. Once she felt my presence she looked up and took of her glasses. “slept well?” and I nodded while chewing on some toast. We ate in complete silence, after breakfast I offered to clean up and Beyonce went to do her work in her study.
Time went by quickly and she was still in her study, so I made lunch and brought it to her. I was about to leave… “stay…” she simply said and we ate together in silence. “Onika” she called from downstairs we had to fetch the kids from school, I asked to come with. To be honest being in her presence comforted me.
We fetched Rumi first since Blue had
after school study. She was happy to see the both of us. “Hi baby, how was school?” she got in the back “great, no homework today” Beyonce finally got off the phone, “hi love, where’s my
kiss?” Rumi kissed her.
