Question:

Why is it that I often get sad and pained when I see other people get further from God? For example, whenever I see people live bad lifestyles and have sex instead of marriage, they are people my age. Is it normal, and if it happens, how do I deal with it?

Answer:

Well, that's pretty normal. You know, even Jesus cried? John 11:35. It hurts because you know the truth. You know there's only two ways. One leads to blissful eternal life, and the other leads to devastation. The reality of that hurts when you want others to see the truth just like you have.

Sin hurts because it affects not just our bodies but our minds, souls, and spirits.  Seeing the world going the wrong way is painful. Imagine how much pain God feels seeing His people, made in His image, falling so far from Him. How does He feel? His grieved. It hurts Him far more than it could ever hurt you.

The people He created with joy are now moving further from what He intended.

By having the Holy Spirit, we will feel grieved, too. You have the Holy Spirit. When He is grieved, you'll sense it. That's why sadness and pain can be in your heart.

Whenever that pain comes, what I suggest is to turn it into intercession. Begin to pray for those people. If you see someone doing something wrong, pray that God opens their eyes, that God speaks to them, and reveals to them the truth. Your pain should be turned to compassion and mercy and be led by love to seek their best.

You have no idea the power of intercession. Intercession means praying for people. Going on their behalf. Ask God to intervene in their lives, and one day in heaven, He could show you the lives your prayers changed.

So you don't have to worry. It's completely normal as Christians to be pained by this, but we should always turn it to prayer, not hopelessness.

John 14:6
