They had been dancing for the past two hours when they finally decided to sit down. And when they finally did they were both out of breath.
"What will you have?" Tommy asks her, looking at the woman fondly as she smiles, completely care-free. He was in absolute awe of this woman. After everything that she had been through in her life, let alone the past week, she still managed to have these moments where they simply didn't matter to her. He needed to learn from her.
"Gin and tonic, please" she says, raising an eyebrow at him. He gives her an over dramatic look of shock, he had never seen her drink something other than whiskey.
"Well, that's a first" he states, waving the waiter over and telling him their drink orders. The young waiter leaves the couple to prepare their drinks.
"I'm a woman of many mysteries Thomas Shelby" she states, leaning forward and pulling the cigarette out of his mouth, grinning at him as she does.
"That you are, Leilani Solomons" he mumbles, leaning back into his chair and analysing her once again. He notices how she looks at everyone in the crowd and smiles.
"What?" He asks, looking at the crowd to see if there is anything of importance there. There wasn't, not in his eyes anyway. The only thing of importance here was her.
"Everyone looks so happy" she says, smiling once again. Although, her smile hadn't left her face since they had entered.
The waiter returned briefly to give them their drinks, smiling politely at the couple, although his eyes lingering a little too long on Lani for Tommy's liking.
As he was preparing to take the drinks off the tray someone suddenly bumps into his back, causing the drinks to go all over the table and spilling onto Lani's dress. It wasn't a terrible mess but it was rather noticeable. Out of instinct Tommy gets up with an angry look on his face, causing the waiter to back up slightly in fear.
"Thomas sit down" she says, laughing slightly at his reaction.
"It's alright love, just go get us some more drinks, give us double what we ordered on the house" she orders, smiling at the man and touching his arm slightly as he attempts to clean the table. Lani notices Thomas's jaw clench slightly at this.
He was impressed by the free drinks and how easy it came to her, giving orders that is. But the thought of her with another man flashed before his eyes and made his whole body tensed.
The waiter hurries off, glad that he didn't have to stay at the table being shouted at.
"What was that?" He asks, his tone harsh as he was giving her a cold stare.
"Oh please" she says, rolling her eyes "You're angry about that?" She asks, honestly stunned at his sudden immaturity and lack of trust in the woman.
"I'm not angry" he states, taking out another cigarette and lighting it, looking away from Lani and over to the waiter who was stood waiting for their drinks by the bar. He noticed how he was looking at Lani and gave him yet another stare. Of course, she noticed this and huffed.
"What now?" He asks, clearly annoyed and not in the middle for communicating.
"I'm going to go and dance and enjoy myself. Join me when you've grown some balls" she snaps, quickly getting up off the chair, her smile finally faltering and was replaced by a mean stare.
She waltzes off and he watches as she makes her way through the crowd to dance by herself. He barely noticed the waiter come back to the table.
"Beautiful one you've got there" he says casually, as if they were friends. Thomas just looks at him with an empty stare.
"If you look at her again tonight, I will put a bullet through your head" he states calmly. The man quickly apologises and leaves, obviously forgetting who he was talking to. Thomas averts his gaze back to Lani who was freely dancing on the floor.
He watches as her face falters into a frown as the song changes to a slower song. Couples were surrounding her, holding onto eachover and laughing. She was just stood there flacidly. Her eyes search the floor once more, Tommy notices how she was probably looking for him. Disappointment made its way onto her face.
He quickly put out his cigarette and shot down his whiskey before getting up and making his way over to her.
He didn't know if she was happy or upset to see him. Either way she rolled her eyes and put her arms around his neck, not looking at him in the eyes.
"Leilani. I'm sorry, alright?" He says, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her in closer. "I just don't like it when other lads look at you like I do" he says calmly, urging her to look him in the eyes.
"Why?" She asks, obviously his answer wasn't enough for her. She wanted to feel validated. She needed to feel validated. To feel like she wasn't going crazy.
"Because you're my girlfriend" he says, a smile growing on his lips, a contrast to her frown "and I love you" he whispers. This quickly changes her mood as her head swings to face him as she looks him in the eyes.
"What?" She asks. Not knowing if she had misheard him.
"I love you, Leilani Solomons" he says again, louder this time.
She doesn't say anything. Instead she uses her hands around his neck to lower his head down to hers so she can kiss him. Which she does. They kiss softly in the middle of the dance floor. They finally pull away from eachover as they look at eachover, smiling.
"I love you too, Thomas Shelby" she says softly. Once again, they kiss. Pure ecstasy explodes withing them both.
This. This is what happiness was. Leilani had finally found a home.
"Now can we finally go drink those fucking drinks" she asks, laughing as she presses a hand to Thomas's chest, pushing him away slightly.
"Of course, love" he says, the smile staying on his lips as she holds his hand and leads him back to the table.
"So what's on the agenda tomorrow?" Tommy asks her, taking a sip of a drink. She does the same and smiles at him.
"Well I'm going to have to call work and tell them I won't be back for a while" she says, reaching over the table and holding his hand. Needing to have that physical contact with him.
Tommy smiles again at this.
"Good" he states simply.
They were both entranced in the idea of domestic bliss at this moment. Imagining a future together where they sat in fancy clubs and spoke about upcoming plans, or at home where they would discuss their worries. Everything was perfect in this moment. For them, they were the only two in the room.
Little did they know the change that would occur later that evening. The pain that would be felt. The betrayal, the loss.
