Polly knew the second she saw the girl that she was pregnant. Her gypsy sense were telling her. She was with child. After all that Tommy had put her through, she was going to have his child. She needed to tell her. She knew she did. But she looked absolutely drained.
Leilani sat across from Polly on the couch. She had only said hello and exchanged pleasantries, then went back to nursing her drink. Polly had to say something before she continued to drink herself down a hole of depression. She was pale and looked like she hadn't eaten anything in weeks.
"What?" Lani asks, breaking the silence. She had noticed the woman analysing her with a worried expression and that in itself had put her on edge.
Polly had come a month after the incident. No one had heard anything from her, without a word or sign from her Tommy was growing more and more frustrated. Whenever her name was mentioned Tommy would throw a glass or shout something or just leave all together and not come back for days. It was driving everyone mad.
"Stand up" she instructs. Lani grins at this. Another Shelby bossing her about. She didn't mind with Polly as much. She had better intentions and she was always kind to her. So with that she stood up. However she sat right back down after Polly suddenly groped her breast.
"Pol!" She shouts, her arms instinctively going around her breasts in defence.
"I think you're pregnant" she states, sitting down next to Lani.
She watches as the life rushes out of her face.
"No. Pol I can't be" she whispers, a tear rolling down her face.
She can't. Her relationship with Tommy, whatever that was, was too complicated. A baby would just throw a whole other thing into the mix. She had really fucked up.
"I'm taking you to the doctor"

"Twelve weeks"
Twelve fucking weeks.
Dot was horrified. She looked at her sister like she had just sacrificed a child right in front of her. That probably would have been better for her sister than this. Lani having sex before marriage. God, the horror!
"Dot. Siarad" Talk. She hadn't said anything. Her reaction was causing Lani to feel sick. More sick than she felt already.
"Did you not think when you hadn't bled for three months?" She snaps, staring her sister directly in the eye with a disapproving look. That look could burn through her, at this moment she kind of wish it had.
"I was stressed" she admits "I thought it was fucking stress" she says, internally screaming at herself. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Why the fuck did she go to her sister of all people. She was only going to judge her and give her a lecture.
"Ti di deud wrth Alfie?" Have you told Alfie? Dot asks, leaning forward in her chair, not breaking eye contact with the girl. Lani thought that this is what Christine must feel like. Always being spoken down to by her mother. She understands why she's never home
She just shakes her head.
"Pwy sy'n gwybod?" Who knows? Dot asks. Dorothea always liked to get all of the information before she made her thoughts clear. But by the way her sister was answering, she was showing her thoughts very clearly. Her face twisted into a harsh frown with a cold stare that could cut through stone.
"Polly a ti" You and Polly. She answers.
The silence was deafening.
Neither of them spoke. Both too engulfed in their own thoughts.
Dot couldn't believe her sisters stupidity. She was independent, strong. Yes it was something that angered her on a daily basis, but she had it. She made it her whole personality, being strong and not needing a man. But she's just thrown that all away. Honestly Dot was disappointed. By the way it was looking she did not want to go back to Tommy. So that left her alone. A single mother with a bastard child. She was going to give them both a shit life. And Dorothea knew that she couldn't be part of it.
Lani couldn't believe herself. She was no better than a common whore. At least whores had stability and no children. But that's what she was going to be known as. A whore. A whore with a bastard in her womb. But she knew that she didn't have a choice. She couldn't get rid of it. She wouldn't. And she definitely wouldn't go back to Tommy. Even if she wanted to, it would just seem that she was back because of the child. Which it was. And he would want to marry, and she couldn't bind herself to him for that long. Not after what he had done. So the solution was either to marry another man with no emotional connection, which was a bad idea, or raise the child as a bastard by herself. Which seemed more realistic.
"Dwi'n cael o. A dwi ddim am priodi neb" I'm having it. And I'm not marrying anyone. Leilani states. She wasn't going to take any more bullshit or bribes from her sister. She was still strong.
Although it was difficult, she had to keep up her walls. She wasn't going to let anyone boss her about, especially her condescending sister. This was just an inconvenience. She was still her.
"Pob lwc gyda hwna, oherwydd bydda I ddim yma I ti" Good luck with that, because I'm not going to be here for you. Dot speaks harshly. Finally breaking the eye contact. The look on her face would make you think that Lani had just shot a dog right in front of her. Or burnt the bible, that would probably be worse for her.
She was cutting her off. She was cutting her off because she wasn't going to get married to someone who either didn't love her, or caused her so much pain, that even the thought of him makes her want to cry and throw up.
Dot had chosen her religion over her own blood. Well, God, the fucker, must be proud. Lani internally laughed to herself at her thought.
Sisterhood, in this instance, was truly a con.
