It was difficult to walk down the street with Tommy and the babies. Seeing as Angharad had told people that the Father of her children was dead. It was easier to say that she was a widower than a mother who left her partner, unmarried and pregnant. The village in which she lived was quaint, cozy and friendly. But extremely religious. It was best to keep the truth to herself.
Now, they were walking over to Tommy's car, he had driven it the whole way down a few days ago. Probably didn't have enough time to buy a train ticket once he had found her address.
They were going back to Birmingham for a week, Tommy made the case that his family would want to meet the children, and that they missed Lani. In all truth, she missed them. She had stopped herself so many times from picking up the phone and calling Polly. But she couldn't, she knew that she would tell Tommy and that would just cause drama and upset. But had too much time past now? Would polly greet her with her distant cold stare and a harsh tone? Would the brothers be angry with her? How would she care for her children properly if she were to be distracted? This was a bad idea. And she knew that it was going to end badly.
"Why is everyone looking at me like they've just seen a ghost? Surely they don't know me down here, not by my face anyway" Tommy asks casually, looking over at Lani who seemed to be deep in thought. Although she was torn away by his question.
"Because I told everyone that you were dead" she says, equally as casually, like it didn't feel as though a knife had just been plunged into his heart.
"And why the fuc-" he starts angrily but Lani cuts across him.
"Don't swear in front of the kids" she snaps, sending him a warning glare.
"How do you expect to go through a week with my family and not have them swear in front of them?" He asks, he was annoyed now. Upset, and annoyed. He just wanted it to go back to what it was like before, before he had fucked everything up.
"I'm trying to minimalise it, I'm not stupid Tommy" she says, looking in front of her and waving to one of her neighbours, putting on a fake smile.
Her smile falls again once the neighbour passes and she has to turn back to her reality. Tommy notices this, he notices how much she truly hates him at the moment. He had to change that.
Yet another person walks towards them, this time Lani smiles even wider, this one wasn't fake. The man walking towards them was probably around 30, tall, handsome and was smiling at Lani. It was like they were mocking him. Who the fuck was he?
"Hiya cariad" Hiya Love. He calls out, once he reaches he gives her a hug and kneels down beside the pram. He begins to fuss over the twins. Tommy's children. This absolute stranger was making his children laugh. He was making the love of his life laugh.
"Sut wyt ti?" How are you? He asks, turning to look at the woman, his eyes averting to Tommy momentarily before returning to Lani. He had a presumption in his voice. He hadn't seen this man before.
"Dwi'n iawn diolch. Sorri, hwn di Tommy" I'm alright thanks. Sorry this is Tommy. She says, turning ti Tommy briefly sending him a forced straight smile.
"Ti'n olew?" You alright? He asks casually, putting his hands in his pockets.
"I don't speak welsh" Tommy snaps at the man, putting a cigarette in between his lips. Angharad sends him a pointed look and tuts him silently, earning a glare from Tommy. He wasn't in a good mood today. She didn't care. He could suffer for a while.
"Sorry mate. I'm Owain" he says kindly, reaching his hand out for Tommy to shake. He doesn't. He just keeps one hand in his pocket and the other holding his cigarette.
Owain had come into Angharads life a week or so after she had arrived with her father. He was a doctor. Not the one that she had seen about her children's cries, she had met him outside. He had chased her out and given her some advice, not that it worked, but she appreciated the sentiment. Since then they had been friendly and had been out drinking every once in a while, whenever Angharads father could look after teh children. Or other times he would come over and cook her dinner and help with the children. He was her friend. She was happy to finally have one of those.
She was happy with her Father. But she didn't want to spend her every waking moment with him. She needed a break every once in a while. And Owain had been a really good help with that.
"Alright" Tommy mumbles, looking the man up and down, inspecting him. Analysing him. Lani wanted to punch him. She was glaring at him with hateful eyes and Tommy knew that, he could feel her glare burning into the side of his face. But he couldn't tare his eyes away from the man in front of him.
"And how do you two know eachover?" Owain asks, trying to remain polite, even after Tommy had completely offended him, and he had every right to walk away then and there.
"Tommy's-" Angharad begins to explain but is cut across by Tommy.
"I'm the twins father" he snaps, his jaw clenching slightly around his cigarette in his mouth.
Owain looks between him and Angharad, giving the woman a questionable look before looking back at the twins once again. He didn't know what to say. He had just come to say hello to his friend and here was this wanker giving him the stink eye and welcoming him with a harsh voice.
"Wyt ti'n sâff?" Are you safe? He asks quietly, almost a whisper to Angharad, leaning in slightly and looking her in the eyes.
Angharad is greatful for his question. She smiles at him and leans in aswel, meeting him halfway and putting her hand on his arm.
"Yndw. Dwi'n sorri nes I ddim dweud wrtha ti amdan hwn. Ond dwi' sâff gyda fo" Yes. I'm sorry that I didn't tell you about this. But I'm safe with him. She says gently, smiling at him softly, then stepping back and looking at Tommy, who looks like he was ready to punch Owain at any given second.
At that she decides that it's time to leave as she gives Owain a quick hug and waves him goodbye, before carrying on down the near empty street towards Tommy's car.
"You don't have to be a dick to everyone you know, he's nice" Angharad speaks, an annoyed tone making its way into her voice as she continues to push the pram down the street.
"He's nice to you for one reason only, and you know that. You're not stupid Leilani Solomons" Tommy says, flicking his cigarette on the floor and looking directly in front of him, not looking at her.
"Fuck you"
