Lain is the God of Doomsday

Lain is the God of Doomsday. As the patron of the apocalypse, he is a surprisingly very serious god. His simple presence demands respect and fear from everyone in the room, causing them to practically trip over themselves to avoid bringing his catastrophic wrath.

As said in the previous chapter, Phelix is the God of Destruction, but even he has his limits. He can only destroy physical things, not ideas, not concepts. He cannot destroy reality itself. That's where Lain comes in. His power can destroy everything - physics, reality, and, eventually, the universe. No plant, human, animal, galaxy, or god is safe from his reach.

It's because of this power that he is considered the darkest of the Dark Gods, with his very name being enough to send a shiver of fear down the spine of any deity. Even Phelix and the Princes of Chaos, the Gods of Destruction, Darkness, and Monsters, respectively, shudder when even a slight mention of him is brought up in conversation.

Because his power is so feared, constraints were placed upon it long ago. He has one role and is expected to stick to it.

For a hundred million years, he sort of "hibernates" at the center of the universe. When the years are up, he wakes up and ventures out into the far reaches of the universe to see what has transpired during his slumber. If he likes what he sees, he'll return to where he came from and go back into his hibernation for another hundred million years. But if he finds more than a few things that he dislikes, he'll deem the reality a failure and bring about its destruction - in other words, its doomsday. Then, using the remaining ashes of the universe, he sets the wheels into motion to create the next reality, then goes back into his hundred million year sleep.

Surprising? It should be. He's done it twice already, and you most likely had no idea.

Since he's also associated with recreation and rebirth, several apocalyptic cults are based around him. They pray and offer sacrifices (both animal and human) in an attempt to wake him from his slumber so that he can make the universe anew.

Luckily for everyone else, he's too far away for him to hear their prayers...

It could be something monumental that has him deciding not to destroy the universe, or it could be something small and simple. There's a myth that he was once on the verge of destroying reality, but was stopped by the tender eyes of an adorable hedgehog. He unfortunately decided not to bring it back to the center of the universe with him, unable to bring himself to subject an innocent creature to an eternal slumber.

All deities are destroyed when Lain remakes the universe, as new concepts will be created in the next reality, which will come with new deities. The only gods he can't destroy are heavenly siblings Pri and Pax, the Gods of Balance and History respectively. They both have essential roles, no matter what universe they're in. Once Lain sets the new reality into motion, Pri must ensure that everything comes to fruition in order for life to form. Pax must detail both the destruction of the old universe and the creation of the new universe in his endless book - he is the only one in existence who has complete knowledge of every reality that ever existed.

The three deities have worked hand in hand since the very first reality, seeing the death of one and the birth of another. It's not an easy job, but they know that they're the only ones to do it.
