Memories ⚝ Chapter 11

April 14-16, 2014

She walked in through the doors that had once made her feel safe; like she was protected. Agents now walked around her, and she felt closed off. Her lungs struggled to get enough air. The room was big but full of both people who knew who they were working for, and people who thought they did.

Prisoners were being escorted left and right. Today was a busy day for SHIELD. People were running around getting ready for the launch.

"Ginny!" Steve's voice came in her ear making her jump. Some people looked in her direction wondering what made her jump in the air.

"What?" She whispered into her earpiece.

"We've been talking to you," Natasha's soothing voice came, "Are you in position?"

"Almost," Virginia responded as she walked into the elevator. The only other occupant was Rumlow. He was a man she once had respect for. They had been friends or close.

Her job was to get to the meeting area where Pierce would be presenting the launch to the counsel and undercover Natasha. Her job was to make sure it didn't get messy. Steve had decided that she shouldn't be seeing Bucky until he was back.

"Rumlow." She said with a nod to the man that she now despised.

"Doctor." He responded with the smallest twinge upward of his lips. "Where are you going today?"

Virginia was not blind. He liked her and she knew it. But she played dumb, it was the only way she didn't end up punching some guy on the street who got on her 7 trillion nerves. Something had always been off about the way Rumlow talked and kept 'secrets'. But now it all made sense.

"I'm going to observe the launch with Pierce," She smiled which made her cringe.

"Do you have a notice from him?" Rumlow asked his smile slightly faded

"Right here" Virginia pulled a paper forged by Fury earlier. "It might have... expired but I find it fascinating how years ago we made it to the moon. Now we are going to be able to have massive battleships in the sky for whenever the world needs protecting." She said with a smile again.

Rumlow nodded and smiled again. Virginia could not tell if it was fake or real which made her uneasy,

Come on Ginny! You were trained for this. You should be able to tell if his smile is real or fake. That's just the edge of what you can do; so do it! Understand the lousy asshol-

Her thoughts were cut off by the loudspeaker turning on with an announcement that Steve had planned to do.

"Attention, all SHIELD agents. This is Steve Rogers. You've heard a lot about me over the last few days, some of you were even ordered to hunt me down. But I think it's time you know the truth. SHIELD is not what we thought it was, it's been taken over by HYDRA. Alexander Pierce is their leader. The STRIKE and Insight crew are HYDRA as well. I don't know how many more, but I know they're in the building. They could be standing right next to you. They almost have what they want: absolute control. They shot Nick Fury and it won't end there. If you launch those Helicarriers today, HYDRA will be able to kill anyone that stands in their way, unless we stop them. I know I'm asking a lot, but the price of freedom is high, it always has been, and it's a price I'm willing to pay. And if I'm the only one, then so be it. But I'm willing to bet I'm not." Steve announced to the entire faculty.

The elevator that Rumlow and Virginia were in pulled to a stop as they reached the floor she was going to get off at.

"Wow, that was a lot. When people call him a people person they are not lying" She said with a smirk and stepped off. Virginia turned and smiled smugly at Rumlow. "Have a good day, agent."
