Yilling Laozu rushed off to find the same clearing in the forest where he had seen Hanguang-Jun end his life, knowing he would have to wait in hiding for a few more hours. The task would be simple enough since every year on the anniversary of Hanguang-Jun-s death he would go to the clearing and leave gifts at his makeshift grave. He climbed a tree with a complete view of the clearing and began to put his thoughts in order. Hesistantly he called one of his helpers "A-Hua". A beautiful woman in a red wedding dress floated before him with a big smile on painted red lips. "Sorry it took so long to call A-Hua I need a favor from you, please. I will be going to the Lan Clan soon. Can you please make a report of any wrongdoings the corrupted elders of that clan have done? Ask in the underworld if you must; I wanna know it all." The woman nodded before patting his head gently and leaving. With nothing else to do Yilling Laozu pulled out talisman paper and started making the talismans he invented to fight off Wen Rouhan.

He had gotten so consumed in his work that he almost fell out of the tree when someone entered the clearing. The air was knocked out of his lungs when he saw the Hanguang-Jun standing before him after so long. He was mesmerized by the man's dark hair swaying in the breeze, deep piercing golden eyes full of sorrow, and white blinding aura. He hated seeing such a haunted look in those beautiful golden orbs. It took him a moment to move on from his beauty and take in the scene in front of him before he panicked. Lan Wangji was raising his crystal-like sword to his throat. In an act of desperation, Yilling Laozu flung himself out of the tree tackling Lan Wangji to the floor and knocking the sword away from him.

Lan Wangji stared up from the ground at the man sitting on top of him with empty but startled eyes. He stood up straightening his robes before bowing in respect. "Forgive me Sect Leader Lan but please don't kill yourself. How about you marry me instead?" He panicked when he said the words not knowing what would come out of his mouth; however, looking into Lan Wangji's soulless eyes he couldn't even think of taking it back. Being Lan Wangji's husband would be the only way to be close enough to ensure the man's safety. Standing up he looked at Hanguang-Jun with his brightest smile and recent eyes.

The man hunched his shoulders and just gave a defeated sigh. " Am I really that pathetic that a strange man has to offer to marry me? Fine, do whatever you want." Yilling Laozu looked at him puzzled "Pathetic? Why would I think you are pathetic? You are the most righteous man I have ever met. Please let me be of use to you. Give me two years, just two. If in that time you are still unsatisfied with me you can divorce me and I will no longer be part of your life with no strings attached." Lan Wangji just stared at him before grabbing his sword from where it had landed. "Fine. Come." He flew off on his sword without any other word forcing Wei Wuxian to catch up. Now he was glad for those five years he had of practice using his sword after so many years of only using his flute. In the underworld, he rarely needed to use spiritual energy but in the human world, his cultivation was taboo.

They traveled in silence for many hours without stopping. If a lesser cultivator had been the one making the trip they would have had to stop for a break in between. It was late at night when they reached Gusu, and Lan Wangji was surprised when Yilling Laozu landed a few seconds after him. In the meantime, Yilling Laozu worried that because of the rules, he would have to wait outside until the morning, but Lan Wangji brought him past the barrier. They were met inside by Lan Wangji's father Quingheng-Jun who had been doing the guard rounds. After greetings between them were exchanged Lan Wangji asked his father to please lead his guest to the Gentian house. Both men stared in shock as Lan Wangji walked off. The Gentian house was the place where Lan Wangji's mother lived her years in at Cloud Recesses. The place had not been touched by anyone apart from a monthly cleaning since her passing. Also, it was the fact that Lan Wangji walked away without introducing Yilling Laozu at all.
