Lan Wangji finally returned home from Nightless City days before their daughter's one-month celebration. It was decided that there would be no more Wen Sect. The land was distributed amongst the sects that fought in the war. This would keep the civilians safe while helping the economy of the sects. Some had made a fuss about rumors of Yilling, but he was able to shut those down swiftly. It hadn't been a month since he was named Chief Cultivator, yet the position had already allowed him to protect his husband multiple times. The sect leaders kept treating Wei Wuxian as if he was a war prize to be fought over.

He made his way to the Jingshi stealthily to see his husband as soon as possible. He refused to be stopped by everyone to do proper greetings. Not very good Chief Cultivator behavior, though he honestly didn't care. His blood pumped faster as he quietly opened the door to surprise his husband. In the Jingshi he could hear Wei Wuxian's voice singing in what used to be his room. With the war, they did not have time to decorate the room for the baby. He was excited to see what the nursery looked like now that his husband had the chance to decorate it.

As he carefully opened the nursery door he was left breathless. The lavender-colored walls were decorated with paintings of himself, his husband, and their loved ones. There was even a picture of Wei Wuxian in all his Yilling Laozu glory and what he suspected was his godly form of Hanguang-Jun.  A fancy crib was adorned with bunnies and matching furniture, including a rocking chair. Many kinds of art supplies and fans were in the corner of the room. Wei Wuxian was sitting on the rocking chair singing and smiling at their daughter who was playing with something (.....a red potato with legs? (Wen Ning had sowed it himself for the baby)) in his arms.

Silently he walked to his husband finally catching his attention. Wei Wuxian jumped up, excitedly startling their daughter before rushing into Lan Wangji's arms. "Lan Zhan I was worried you didn't want to come home. You were gone soooooooooo long." Lan Wangji rubbed their daughter's black hair while kissing Wei Wuxian's head reassuringly. "Wei Ying I can promise you that even if they had cut off all my limbs I would have found a way to crawl back to you." Wei Wuxian blushed beautifully smiling shyly while looking down at their daughter before handing her into his arms making her giggle.

It took around 20 minutes of singing to get the baby asleep in her crib. They had to work hard to silently slip out of the room. It was like their daughter had a proximity alarm. Every time they were almost at the door she would cry pulling them back in to comfort her. Lan Wangji started heading for their room eagerly wanting to bask in his husband's comforting presence. He had stepped into the room when he realized his husband wasn't following him. Turning around confused he found that Wei Wuxian had stopped in front of the baby's room. He was looking at the ground with his hands fisted and shaking. "Wei Ying?"

Wei Wuxian looked up at him with tears in his eyes squeezing Lan Wangji's heart. "Lan Zhan........the war is over now and those who hurt you were put in their place........ you even have an heir. Isn't that great?" Wei Wuxian gave a watery smile that made him feel even more uneasy. "Ah Lan Zhan, my Lan Zhan.....you don't need me anymore. It's ok I-" It was like a bucket of cold water was dropped on his head hearing what Wei Wuxian was not saying. If he allowed the man to finish Lan Wangji was sure that Wei Wuxian was about to try and leave him. Lan Wangji crossed the distance shutting him up with a harsh demanding kiss. He didn't stop until he felt Wei Wuxian melt into his arms. "Wei Ying, what are you talking about? You are my husband. I need you.  We are fully mated we belong together now and forever. Where did these thoughts come from?"

Wei Wuxian stayed silent in his arms for a few seconds. He seemed to be debating if he should tell Lan Wangji or keep things to himself. "I overheard some elders talking about how relieved the Lan sect would be once our two-year contract was over. They wouldn't have to live with a monster in Cloud Recesses. They are not wrong... I did kind of lose my head when you got captured. I don't want to cause you trouble with your sect and family Lan Zhan. It looks like they already figured out how to forcefully break the mating bond. I can go live in my house in the Burial Mounds until I get called back to my post. I want you to live peacefully and happy with your daughter." Lan Wangji's blood was boiling with concealed rage. He had forgotten that as part of Gusu Lan the elders could enforce the contract over even their leader. Not that it would have worked well. He would have just eloped with Wei Wuxian right after.
